Yuddha Kanda: Chapter 93

स प्रविश्य सभां राजा दीनः परमदुःखितः। निषसादासने मुख्ये सिंहः क्रुद्ध इव श्वसन्॥
Entering his court, the king, distressed, and exceeding aggrieved sat him down on the foremost seat sighing like an enraged lion.

अब्रवीच्च स तान्सर्वान्बलमुख्यान्महाबलः। रावणः प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं पुत्रव्यसनकर्शितः॥
And stricken with grief in consequence of his son's death, that highly powerful Ravana, with folded hands, addressed all the heroic Rākşasas saying.

सर्वे भवन्तः सर्वेण हस्त्यश्वेन समावृताः। निर्यात रथसङ्घश्च हस्त्यश्वैश्चोपशोभिताः॥ एकं रामं परिक्षिप्य समरे हन्तुमर्हथ। प्रहृष्टाः शरवर्षाणि प्रावृट्काल इवाम्बुदाः॥
Do you all proceed to battle with elephants, horses and cars. And encircling Rāma only and discharging shafts at him, delightedly, like to clouds, in the rainy season, poring water, do you slay him.

अथवाहं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैभिन्नगात्रं महाहवे। भवद्भिः श्वो निरन्तास्मि रामं लोकस्य पश्यतः॥
Or I shall slay him to morrow in the presence of all, wounded by you in the mighty encounter with sharpened arrows.

इत्येतद्वाक्यमादाय राक्षसेन्द्रस्य राक्षसाः। निर्ययुस्ते रथैः शीघे नानीकैश्च संयुताः॥
Hearing the speech of their lord the Rākṣasas, with a huge army and a host of cars, speedily issued out for battle.

परिघान्पट्टिशांश्चैव शरखङ्गपरश्वधान्। शरीरान्तकरान्सर्वे चिक्षिपुर्वानरान्प्रति।। वानराश्च द्रुमाञ्छैलानराक्षसान्प्रति चिक्षिपुः॥
They all threw at the monkeys life-destroying Parighas, pattisas, arrows, daggers and Parasvadhas. And the monkeys too threw crags and trees at the Rākşasas.

स संग्रामो महाभीमः सूर्यस्योदयनं प्रति। रक्षसां वानराणां च तुमुलः समपद्यत।।।।
Thus on the eve of sun set there arose a terrible conflict between the Rakşasas and the monkeys.

ते गदाभिश्च चित्राभिः प्रासैः खङ्गैः परश्वधैः। अन्योन्यं समरे जघ्नुस्तदा वानरराक्षसाः।९।।
They struck each other in the conflict with clubs chitras, Prasas daggers and Parasvadha.

एवं प्रवृत्चे संग्रामे ह्यद्भुतं सुमहद्रजः। रक्षसां वानराणां च शान्तं शोणितविस्रवैः॥
The conflict being thus carried on, there arose a mighty dust which was again destroyed by the current of blood gushing out of the persons of the Rakşasas and the monkeys:

मातंगरथकूलाश्च शरमत्स्या ध्वजदुमाः। शरीरसंघाटवहाः प्रसस्नुः शोणितापगाः॥
Elephants and cars were like the banks of that river of blood, the arrows were like the fishes, and the flags were the trees on their banks and the corpses were like planks afloat there.

ततस्ते वानराः सर्वे शोणितौघपरिप्लुताः। ध्वजवर्मरथानश्वान्नानाप्रहरणानि च।। आप्लुत्याप्लुत्य समरे वानरेन्द्रा बभञ्जिरे॥
Being thus wounded and assailed by the Rākşasas, those heroic monkeys leaped and broke down the flags, armours, cars, horses and other weapons.

केशान्कर्णललाटं च नासिकाश्च प्लवंगमाः। रक्षसां दशनैस्तीक्ष्णैर्नखैश्चापि व्यकर्तयन्॥
With their sharp teeth and nails they scratched the hair, ears, foreheads and the noses of the Raksasas.

एकैकं राक्षसं संख्ये शतं वानरपुङ्गवाः। अभ्यधावन्त पतितं वृक्षं शकुनयो यथा॥
Like to vultures falling upon a felled tree, hundreds of monkeys fell upon one Räkşasas in that encounter.

तदा गदाभिर्गुर्वीभिः प्रासैः खङ्गैः परश्वधैः। निर्जघ्नुर्वानरान्घोराराक्षसाः पर्वतोपमाः॥
The Rákşasas resembling mountains, with huge clubs, prasas, daggers and Parasvādhas, struck the monkeys (in their turn).

राक्षसैर्वध्यमानानां वानराणां महाचमूः। शरण्यं शरणं याता रामं दशरथात्मजम्॥
Being thus assailed by the Räkşasas, the mighty host of monkeys took refuge of Răma, the son of Dasaratha, the worthy refuge of all creatures.

ततो रामो महातेजा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान्। प्रविश्य राक्षसं सैन्यं शरवर्ष ववर्ष च॥
Thereupon the highly effulgent and powerful Rāma, taking up his bow, entered the Rākşasa host and began to make a downpour of arrows.

प्रविष्टं तु तदा रामं मेघाः सूर्यमिवाम्बरे। नाधिजग्मुर्महाघोरा निर्दहन्तं शराग्निना॥
Rama entering the field, those terrible Rakş asas, being burnt with the fire of his arrows, could not stand before him like to clouds disappearing before the Sun in the welkin.

कृतान्येव सुघोराणि रामेण रजनीचराः। रणे रामस्य ददृशुः कर्माण्यसुकाराणि ते॥
The night-rangers only espied the dreadful feats performed by Råma and which were above the power of others.

चालयन्तं महासैन्यं विधमन्तं महारथान्। ददृशुस्तेन वै रामं वातं वनगतं यथा॥
Except when guiding the huge army or driving the cars they could not see Rama like to the wind invisible in a forest.

छिन्नं भिन्नं शरैर्दग्धं प्रभग्नं शस्त्रपीडितम्। बलं रामेण ददृशुर्न रामं शीघ्रकारिणम्॥
The all beheld the Råkşasas force scattered, wounded, burnt down with arrows, broken and assailed with weapons by Rāma But none could see the quick moving Rāma.

प्रहरन्तं शरीरेषु न ते पश्यन्ति राघवम्। इन्द्रियार्थेषु तिष्ठन्तं भूतात्मानामिव प्रजाः॥
As people cannot see the soul which governs all objects of sense so they could not see Rāma, who was thus inflicting wounds on them.

एष हन्ति गजानीकमेष हन्ति महारथान्। एष हन्ति शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः पदातीन्वाजिभिः सह॥ इति ते राक्षसाः सर्वे रामस्य सदृशारणे। अन्योन्यं कुपिता जघ्नुः सादृश्याद्राघवस्य तु॥
It is he who is destroying the soldiers riding the elephants, it he who is breaking down the mighty cars, and it is he who with sharp arrows is slaying the cavalry-rider and horse. "Thus saying those Räkşasas, in that conflict and in the very presence of Rāma, highly enraged began to slay each other.

न ते ददृशिरे रामं दहन्तमपि वाहिनीम्। मोहिताः परमात्रेण गान्धर्वेण महात्मना॥
They were all bewildered by the huge Gandharva weapon discharged by the high souled Rama and so they could not see Rama, whose was thus burning down their force.

ते तु रामसहस्राणि रणे पश्यन्ति राक्षसाः। पुनः पश्यन्ति काकुत्स्थमेकमेव महाहवे॥
The Rákşasas sometimes beheld thousands of Rāma in the battle field and again saw one Rāma only.

भ्रमन्ता काञ्चनी कोटिं कार्मुकस्य महात्मनः। अलातचक्रप्रतिमां ददृशुस्ते न राघवम्॥
They at times saw the quick-moving golden end of the bow of that high-souled one, resembling a circular fire brand but they did not behold Rāghava.

शरीरनाभिसत्वार्चिः शरीरं नेमिकार्मुकम्। ज्याघोषतलनिर्घोषं तेजोबुद्धिगुणप्रभम्॥ दिव्यास्त्रगुणपर्यन्तं निघ्नन्तं युधि राक्षसान्। ददृशू रामचक्रं तत्कालचक्रमिव प्रजाः॥
He looked like kālacakra, having his middle body as its navel, his own strength as its lustre, the arrow for its radius or spoke, the bow for the circumference, the twang of the bow for its sound, his power and intelligence for its brightness, and the aim of the celestial Weapons for its limit.

अनीकं दशसाहस्रं रथानां वातरंहसाम्। अष्टादश सहस्राणि कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम्।।३० चतुर्दश सहस्राणि सारोहाणां च वाजिनाम्। पूर्णे शतसहस्रे द्वे राक्षसानां पदातिनाम्॥ दिवसस्याष्टभागेन शरैरग्निशिखोपमैः। हतान्येकेन रामेण रक्षसां कामरूपिणाम्॥
In the eighth division of the time by Rāma alone with arrows resembling the flame of fire were destroyed ten thousands swift-coursing cars, eighteen thousand elephants fourteen thousand horses and riders and tow million Rākṣasas infantry assuming shapes at will.

ते हताश्वा हतरथाः शान्ता विमथितध्वजाः। अभिपेतुः पुरीं लङ्कां हतशेषा निशाचराः॥
And those night rangers, who were still left, having their horses killed, cars and flags broken fled in fear of life to the city of Lanka.

हतैर्गजपदात्यश्वैस्तद्वभूव रणाजिरम्। आक्रीडभूमिः क्रुद्धस्य रुद्रस्येव महात्मनः॥
The battle field, filled with slain horses, elephants and infantry, looked like the high-souled and enraged Rudra's arena of sports.

ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः। साधुसाध्विति रामस्य तत्कर्म समपूजयन्॥
Thereupon the celestials with Gandarbas, Siddhas and the great ascetics glorified the wonderful feat of Rāma.

अब्रवीच्च तदा राम सुग्रीवं प्रत्यनन्तरम्। विभीषणं च धर्मात्मा हनूमन्तं च वानरम्॥ जाम्बवन्तं हरिश्रेष्ठं मैन्दं द्विविदमेव च। एतदत्रबलं भीमं मम वा त्र्यम्बकस्य वा॥
The virtuous-souled Rāma addressed Sugrīva, Vibhīşaņa the monkey Hanumān, the leading monkeys Jämbavān, Mainda and Divada who were near him, saying, This is the power of my weapons and as well as that of Rudra.

निहत्य तां राक्षसराजवाहिनी रामस्तदा शक्रसमो महात्मा।। अस्त्रेषु शस्त्रेषु जितक्लमश्च संस्तूयते देवगणैः प्रहृष्टैः॥
The high-souled Rāma, equalling Śakra in prowess, thus slaying the huge host of the lord of Rākşasas and assailing them with shafts and weapons-the celestials, delighted, saying his praises.
