संजय उवाच तथा तु वदतां तेषां प्रादुरासीद् धनंजयः। दिक्षुर्भरतश्रेष्ठं राजानं ससुहृद्गणम्॥
Sanjaya said When they were thus conversing, Dhananjaya appeared there, desirous of seeing that foremnost of Bharatas, viz., king Yudhishthira and his relatives.
तं निविष्टं शुभां कक्ष्यामभिवन्द्याग्रतः स्थितम्। तमुत्थायार्जुनं प्रेम्णा सस्वजे पाण्डवर्षभः॥
When he had entered that auspicious chamber and was standing before the king, having saluted him duly, that foremost of the Pandavas (king Yudhishthira) rose from his। seat and out of affection, embraced Arjuna.
मूनि चैनमुपाघ्राय परिष्वज्य च बाहुना। आशिषः परमाः प्रोच्य स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत॥
Having locked Arjuna in his affectionate embrace and having smelled the crown of his head and pronouncing best benedictions of
व्यक्तमर्जुन संग्रामे ध्रुवस्ते विजयो महान्। याग्रूपा च ते च्छाया प्रसन्नश्च जनार्दनः॥
“It is evident, O Arjuna, that in today's fight a great victory is sure to court you, inasmuch as your very appearance indicates it, as also the fact that Janardana is gratified with you.”
तमब्रवीत् ततो जिष्णुर्महदाश्चर्यमुत्तमम्। दृष्टवानस्मि भद्रं ते केशवस्य प्रसादजम्॥
Then Jishnu spoke to him of the wonderful incident (he had seen in his dream) in the following terms "May good betide, you, O monarch! Through the mercy of Keshava, I have seen a marvel."
ततस्तत् कथयामास यथा दृष्टं धनंजयः। आश्वासनार्थं सुहृदां त्र्यम्बकेण समागमम्॥
Then, for giving very assurance to his partisans, Dhananjaya related everything he had seen in his dream-his meeting with the three eyed god.
ततः शिरोभिरवर्नि स्पृष्टवा सर्वे च विस्मिताः। नमस्कृत्य वृषाङ्काय साधु साध्वित्यथाब्रुवन्॥
Thereupon all the hearers filled with wonder, touched the earth with their heads; and thus having bowed down to the god having the bull for his emblem, they said excellent, excellent.
अनुज्ञातास्ततः सर्वे सुहृदो धर्मसूनुना। त्वरमाणा: सुसंनद्धा हृष्टा युद्धाय निर्ययुः॥
Then permitted by the son of Dharma, all the friends and partisans of the Pandavas, cheerfully set out for the battle with haste and with hearts swelling with rage.
अभिवाद्य तु राजानं युयुधानाच्युतार्जुनाः। हृष्टा विनिर्ययुस्ते वै युधिष्ठिरनिवेशनात्॥
Then having saluted the king, Yuyudhana, Arjuna and Krishna of unfading glory, with cheerful hearts, issued out of the chamber of Yudhishthira.
रथेनैकेन दुर्धर्षों युयुधानजनार्दनौ। जग्मतुः सहितौ वीरावर्जुनस्य निवेशनम्॥
Those two indomitable warriors, the heroes Yuyudhana and Janardana, riding on the same car, proceeded towards the abode of Arjuna.
तत्र गत्वा हृषीकेशः कल्पयामास सूतवत्। रथं रथवरस्याजौ वानरर्षभलक्षणम्॥
Repairing there, Hrishikesha dressed and equipped the car of the foremost of warriors, like a profession charioteer-car that bore the device of the monkey prince on its standards.
स मेघसमनिर्घोषस्तप्तकाञ्चनसप्रभः। बभौ रथवदः क्लृप्तः शिशुर्दिवसकृद् यथा॥
Thereupon that best of chariots of rattle resembling the rumble of clouds and of effulgence like that of heated gold, thus equipped (by Keshava), shone like the maker of day in the morning.
ततः पुरुषशार्दूलः सज्जं सज्जपुरःसरः। कृताह्निकाय पार्थाय न्यवेदत तं रथम्॥
Thereafter that foremost of men, namely the son of Vasudeva eased in an armour, told Pritha's son who had completed his morning prayers that his chariot had been made ready.
तं तु लोकवरः पुंसा किरीटी हेमवर्मभृत्। चापबाणधरो वाहं प्रदक्षिणमवर्तत॥
Then that foremost of all men of this world, namely, the diadem-decked Arjuna, clad in a golden cost of mail and holding his bow and arrows in his grasp, circumbulated his vehicle.
तपोविद्यावयोवृद्धैः क्रियावद्भिर्जितेन्द्रियैः। स्तूयमानो जयाशीर्भिरारुरोह महारथम्॥
Then praised and blessed with benedictions believed to bestow victory in battle, by Brahmanas old in the performance of austerities, in knowledge and in years, ever engaged in the performance of religious rites and sacrifices and holding all their passions in subjugation, Arjuna mounted upon his mighty chariot.
जैत्रैः सांग्रामिकैर्मन्त्रैः पूर्वमेव रथोत्तमम्। अभिमन्त्रितमर्चिष्मानुदयं भास्करो यथा॥
That excellent vehicle of his which had been previously purified with victory-giving mantras, like the sun of burning radiance ascending the Eastern mountains.
स रथे रथिनां श्रेष्ठः काञ्चने काञ्चनावृतः। विबभौ विमलोऽर्चिष्मान् मेराविव दिवाकरः॥
Then that best of car-warriors adorned with golden ornaments, shone, in consequence of those golden ornaments of his, on his chariot, like the sun of burning radiance on the breast of the Meru mountain.
अन्वारुरुहतुः पार्थे युयुधानजनार्दनौ। शर्यातेर्यज्ञमायान्तं यथेन्द्र देवमश्विनौ॥
After Partha, Yuyudhana and Janardana mounted on that car, like the twin Ashvinis riding on the best celestial car when they had come to the sacrifice of Sharyati.
अथ जग्राह गोविन्दो रश्मीन् रश्मिविदां वरः। मातलिसिवस्येव वृत्रं हन्तुं प्रयास्यतः॥
The Govinda that best of charioteers took up the reins (of Arjuna's steeds)., like Matali taking up the reins of Indra's horses, when the latter went to fight in order to slay Vritra.
स ताभ्यां सहितः पार्थो रथप्रवरमास्थितः। सहितोबुधशुक्राभ्यां तमोनिघ्नन् यथा शशी॥
Mounting on that his best of cars, with those two heroes Yuyudhana and Janardana, Pritha's son appeared like the moon dispelling darkness when rising in conduction with Budha and Shukra.
सैन्धवस्य वधं प्रेप्सुः प्रयातः शत्रुपूगहा। सहाम्बुपतिमित्राभ्यां यथेन्द्रस्तारकामये॥
Then that slayer of large bodies of foes (Arjuna), desirous of bringing about the slaughter of the Sindhu ruler, proceeded to battle, like Indra accompanied by Varuna and the sun, proceeding to fight with the Asuras, in the battle caused by the abduction of Taraka.
ततो वादित्रनिर्घोषैर्माङ्गल्यैश्च स्तवैः शुभैः। प्रायान्तमर्जुनं वीरं मागधाश्चैव तुष्टुवुः॥
The minstrels and musicians then greeted the heroic Arjuna as he proceeded, with the sounds of musical instruments and eulogies, auspicious and well-worded.
सजयाशीः सपुण्याहः सूतमागधनिःस्वनः। युक्तो वादित्रघोषेण तेषां रतिकरोऽभवत्॥
The voice of the bards and the minstrels pronounced benedictions of victory; and goodday greetings became pleasing to the heroes, being mingled with the din of musical instruments.
तमनुप्रयतो वायुः पुण्यगन्धवहः शुभः। ववौ संहर्षयन् पार्थं द्विषतश्चापि शोषयन्॥ ततस्तस्मिन् क्षणे राजन् विविधानि शुभानि च। प्रादुरासन् निमित्तानि विजयाय बहूनि च। पाण्डवानां त्वदीयानां विपरीतानि मारिष॥
An auspicious breeze bearing bearing holy fragrance, began to blow from behind Partha and it gladdened him, but sucked up the energies of his adversaries. in that moment, O king, various auspicious signs appeared to view, indicative of the victory of the Pandavas.
दृष्ट्वार्जुनो निमित्तानि विजयाय प्रदक्षिणम्। युयुधानं महेष्वासमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्॥
And, O sire, of the reverses of their enemies seeing those signs indicative of victory Arjuna, addressing the mighty bow-man Yuyudhana who was sitting at his right, said these words"O Yuyudhana, in today's battle, my victory is undoubted."
युयुधानाद्य युद्ध मे दृश्यते विजयो ध्रुवः। यथा होमानि लिङ्गानि दृश्यन्ते शिनिपुङ्गव॥
Inasmuch as, O foremost of Sini's race Yuyudhana, these auspicious signs appearing to us.
सोऽहं तत्र गमिष्यामि यत्र सैन्धवको नृपः। यियासुर्यमलोकाय मम वीर्यं प्रतीक्षते॥
I shall now penetrate to the spot where the king of the Sindhus remains desirous of seeing a display of my prowess and of going to the domain of Yama. are
यथा परमकं कृत्यं सैन्धवस्य वधो मम। तथैव सुमहत् कृत्यं धर्मराजस्य रक्षणम्॥
Indeed, as the slaughter of the Sindhu ruler in one of my foremost duties. So also the protection of the very virtuous king Yudhishthira is another imperative duty of mine.
स त्वमद्य महाबाहो राजानां परिपालय। यथैव हि मया गुप्तस्त्वया गुप्तो भवेत् तथा॥
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, do you protect the king this day. So that, protected by you he will be as safe as if he were protected by my own self.
न पश्यामि च तं लोके यस्त्वां युद्धे पराजयेत्। वासुदेवसमं युद्धे स्वयमप्यमरेश्वरः॥
Moreover, I do not see any one who can vanquish you in battle. In battle you are equal to Vasudeva himself; even the lord of the celestials cannot vanquish you.
त्वयि चाहं पराश्वस्तः प्रद्युम्ने वा महारथे। शक्नुयां सैन्धवं हन्तुमनपेक्षो नरर्षभ॥
Placing the burden of the king's protection you the mighty car-warrior Pradyumna. I can, O foremost of men, without anxiety, exert myself in slaying the Sindhu king.
मय्यपेक्षा न कर्तव्या कथंचिदपि सात्वत। राजन्येव परा गुप्तिः कार्या सर्वात्माना त्वा॥
O descendant of the Satvata race, you need not entertain any misgiving about myself. It shall be your first duty to protect the king, with all your heart and soul.
न हि यत्र महाबाहुर्वासुदेवो व्यवस्थितः। किंचिद् व्यापद्यते तत्र यत्राहमपि च ध्रुवम्॥
"There where the mighty-armed son of Vasudeva stay or where I myself stay, certainly no calamity can befall there."
एवमुक्तस्तु पार्थेन सात्यकिः परवीरहा। तथेत्युक्त्वागमत् तत्र यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः॥
