The obtaining of the Pasupata weapon

संजय उवाच ततः पार्थः प्रसन्नात्मा प्राञ्जलिर्वृषभध्वजम्। ददर्शोत्फुल्लनयनः समस्तं तेजसां निधिम्॥
Sanjaya said Then the son of Pritha with a delightful soul and joined palms and eyes expanded in amazement, gazed at the god having the bull for his banner-mark and the receptacle of all energies.

तं चोपहारं सुकृतं नैशं नैत्यकमात्मना। ददर्श त्र्यम्बकाभ्याशे वासुदेवनिवेदितम्॥
He then beheld by the side of the three-eyed god, the offerings he used to make, every night, to the son of Vasudeva.

ततोऽभिपूज्य मनसा कृष्णं शर्वं च पाण्डवः। इच्छाम्यहं दिव्यमस्त्रमित्यभाषत शङ्करम्॥
Thereafter that son of Pandu having worshipped in his mind both Sharva and Krishna, said unto the gold Sankara-'I desire to have the celestial weapon (Pasupata)!'

ततः पार्थस्य विज्ञाय वरार्थे वचनं तदा। वासुदेवार्जुनौ देवः स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत॥
Then having heard the words of Pritha's son, that disclosed that boon he wanted, the god (Mahadeva) with a smile, thus replied to Vasudeva's son and Arjunaस्वागतं वां नरश्रेष्ठौ विज्ञातं मनसेप्सितम्।

वेन कामेन सम्प्राप्तौ भवद्भ्यां तं ददाम्यहम्॥
All hail, O you two foremost of men, I have known the desire of your hearts; I shall grant even that desire of yours which has brought you both here.

सरोऽसृतमयं दिव्यमभ्याशे शत्रुसूदनौ। तत्र मे तद् धनुर्दिव्यं शश्च निहितः पुरा॥
You slayers of foes, there is a heavenly lake of nectar not far from this place; in days gone by, I laid down my celestial bow and arrows there.

येन देवारयः सर्वे मया युधि निपातिताः। तत आनीयतां कृष्णौ सशरं धनुरुत्तमम्॥
With that bow and arrow, I slew in battle all the enemies of the gods. From that lake bring, O Krishnas, that excellent bow and arrow of mine.

अथेत्युक्त्वा तु तौ वीरौ सर्वपारिषदैः सह। प्रस्थितौ तत्सरो दिव्यं दिव्यैश्वर्यशतैर्युतम्॥
Thereupon saying 'year to the words of Siva, the two heroes with all their followers, went to that celestial lake possessed hundreds of celestial wonders.

निर्दिष्टं यद् वृषाङ्केण पुण्यं सर्वार्थसाधकम्। तौ जग्मतुरसम्भ्रान्तौ नरनारायणावृषी॥
Then those two sages Nara and Narayana fearlessly went to that holy lake capable of fulfilling all desires, that had been indicated by the god having the bull for his emblem.

ततस्तौ तत् सरो गत्वा सूर्यमण्डलसंनिभम्। नागमन्तर्जले घोरं ददृशातेऽर्जुनाच्युतौ॥
Thereafter Arjuna and the undeteriorating Krishna having repaired to that lake of the effulgence of the solar disc, saw in its waters a terrible serpent.

द्वितीयं चापरं नाग सहस्रशिरसं वरम्। मन्तं विपुला ज्वाला ददृशातेऽग्निवर्चसम्॥
They also saw there another foremost of snakes possessing a thousands hoods, of the effulgence of fire; it was then vomiting terrible flames.

ततः कृष्णश्च पार्थश्च संस्पृश्याम्भः कृताञ्जली। तौ नागावुपतस्थाते नमस्यन्तौ वृषध्वजम्॥
Then Krishna and Partha, having touched water and having folded their palms and saluted the god having the bull of his emblem, approached those snakes.

गृणन्तौ वेदविद्वांसौ तद् ब्रह्म शतरुद्रियम्। अप्रमेयं प्रणमतो गतवा सर्वात्मना भवम्॥
As they approached the snakes, learned as they were in the Vedas, they recited the hundred slokas in the Veda to the praise of Rudra, saluting all the time with all their heart, Bhava of infinite might. arrow

ततस्तो रुद्रमाहात्म्याद्धित्वा रूपं महोरगौ। धुनर्बाणश्च शत्रुधं तद् द्वन्द्वंद्व समपद्यत॥
Then through the charm of those adorations offered to Rudra, those two snakes forsook their snake forms and assumed the forms of a bow and arrow capable of slaying the enemy.

तौ तज्ज्गृहतुः प्रीतौ धनुर्बाणं च सुप्रभम्। आजह्रतुर्महात्मानौ ददतुश्च महात्मने॥
Then highly delighted, they both took up those effulgent weapons, the bow and the arrow. Then those two high-souled ones, gave that bow and to the illustrious Mahadeva.

ततः पार्वाद् वृषाङ्कस्य ब्रह्मचारी न्यवर्तत। पिङ्गाक्षस्तपसः क्षेत्रं बलवान् नीललोहितः॥
Thereafter from one of the sides of Siva's body, a Brahmacharin issued forth; his eyes were tawny and he seemed to be the refuge of all asceticism. Having blue throat and red hair, he was possessed of great energy.

स तद् गृह्य धनुःश्रेष्ठं तस्थौ स्थानं समाहितः। विचकर्षाथ विधिवत् सशरं धनुरुत्तमम्॥
Then that Brahmacharin taking up that most excellent bow stood in the proper posture. And placing the arrow on the string he began to stretch the latter duly.

तस्य मौर्वी च मुष्टिं च स्थानं चालक्ष्य पाण्डवः। श्रुत्वा मन्त्रं भवप्रोक्तं जग्राहाचिन्त्यविक्रमः॥
Thereupon, seeing the mode of his grasping the bow, drawing the string, placing his legs and hearing also the mantras uttered by Bhava, Pandu's son of infinite prowess duly learnt them all.

स सरस्येव तं बाणं मुमोचातिबलः प्रभुः। चकार च पुनर्वीरस्तस्मिन् सरसि तद्धनुः॥
When the mighty and powerful Brahmacharin, shot that arrow even to the lake whence it had been brought; he also threw that bow into the self-same lake.

ततः प्रीतं भवं ज्ञात्वा स्मृतिमानर्जुनस्तदा। वरमारण्यके दत्तं दर्शनं शङ्करस्य च॥
Thereupon Arjuna gifted with an accurate memory knowing that Bhavas was pleased with him and recollecting the boon the latter had accorded to him in the forest and the sight of his person he had vouchsafed to reveal to him.

मनसा चिन्तयामास तन्मे सम्पद्यतामिति। तस्य तन्मतमाज्ञाय प्रीतः प्रादाद् वरं भवः॥
Desired in his mind that all this might be true, thinking-'May all this be productive of fruit.' Knowing this to be his desire, Bhava pleased with him, gave him the boon.

तच्च पाशुपतं घोरं प्रतिज्ञायाश्च पारणम्। ततः पाशुपतं दिव्यमवाप्य पुनरीश्वरात्॥
He also granted him the terrible Pasupata weapon and the fulfilment of his vow. Then having obtained the Pasupata weapon of celestial make, once more, from the Lord.

संहष्टरोमा दुर्धर्षः कृतं कार्यममन्यत। ववन्दतुश्च संहृष्टौ शिरोभ्यां तं महेश्वरम्॥
The invincible Arjuna, with the down of his body erect, consider his vow already fulfiled. Then with delighted hearts, they (Krishna and Arjuna) saluted the god Maheshvara, by bending their heads low.

अनुज्ञातौ क्षणे तस्मिन् भवेनार्जुनकेशवौ। प्रापतौ स्वशिविरं वीरौ मुदा परमया युतौ॥
Even at that moment obtaining the permission of Bhava, the two heroes Arjuna and Krishna, transported with delight came back to their own encampment.

तथा भवेनानुमतौ महासुरनिघातिना। इन्द्राविष्णू यथा प्रीतौजम्भस्य वधकाक्षिणौ॥
Indeed their joy was as great as that which filled Indra and Vishnu when those two deities, desirous of slaying Jambha, had secured the permission of Bhava (to do so), the slayer of mighty Asuras.
