संजय उवाच तस्मिन्नहनि निर्वृत्ते घोरे प्राणभृतां क्षये। आदित्येऽस्तं गते श्रीमान् संध्याकाल उपस्थिते॥
Sanjaya said When that dreadful day so fraught with the slaughter of creatures had passed away and when the sun set, the auspicious shade of twilight began to spread itself.
व्यपयातेषु वासाय सर्वेषु भरतर्षभ। हत्वा संशप्तकवातान् दिव्यैरस्त्रैः कपिध्वजः॥ प्रायात् स शिबिरं जिष्णु जैत्रमास्थाय तं रथम्। गच्छन्नेव च गोविन्दं साश्रुकण्ठोऽभ्यभाषत॥
Then, O foremost of the Bharatas, when the troops of both the hosts had retired to their respective quarters, the ape-bannered Jishnu having slain the Samshaptaka hosts with his celestial weapons, proceeded towards his pavilion mounted on that victorious chariot of his. As he went on, he asked Govinda, in a voice choked with tears.
किं नु मे हृदयं त्रस्तं वाक् च सज्जति केशव। स्यन्दन्ति चाप्यनिष्टानिगात्रं सीदति चाप्युत॥
“Why, O Keshava, does my mind misgive and why does my speech falter? Evil portents reveal themselves to me and my limbs are becoming weak.
अनिष्टं चैव मे श्लिष्टं हृदयान्नापसर्पति। भुवि ये दिक्षु चात्युग्रा उत्पातास्त्रासयन्ति माम्॥
Thoughts, such as a calamity has befallen me, occupying my heart, does not leave it; on earth, in all the directions, various dreadful portents affright me.
बहुप्रकारा दृश्यन्ते सर्व एवाघशंसिनः। अपि स्वस्ति भवेद् राज्ञः सामात्यस्य गुरोर्मम॥
Various kinds of omens are being seen by me and they harbinger the happening of a calamity, May all things fare well with the king, my venerable superior and with his followers."
वासुदेव उवाच व्यक्तं शिवं तव भ्रातुः सामात्यस्य भविष्यति। मा शुचः किञ्चदेवान्यत् तत्रानिष्टं भविष्यति॥
The son of Vasudeva said It is evident that everything fares well with your brothers and his ministers. Do not give way to evil thoughts; it is probable, that some trivial calamity has taken place.
संजय उवाच ततः संध्यामुपास्यैव वीरौ वीरावसादने। कथयन्तौ रणे वृत्तं प्रयातौ रथमास्थितौ॥
Sanjaya said Then those two heroes, having adored the evening twilight, proceeded on their car talking of the incidents of that day's battle so destructive of heroes.
ततः स्वशिबिरं प्राप्तौ हतानन्दं हतत्विषम्। वासुदेवोऽर्जुनश्चैव कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्॥
Thereafter having achieved feats difficult of being achieved, Arjuna and Vasudeva reached the Pandava encampments, joyless joyless and melancholy.
ध्वस्ताकारं समालक्ष्य शिबिरं परवीरहा। बीभत्सुब्रवीत् कृष्णमस्वस्थहृदयस्ततः॥
Then that slayer of foes, Vibhatsu, beholding the camp in confusion, said to Krishna with a sorrowful heart-
अर्जुन उवाच नदन्ति नाद्य तूर्योणि मङ्गल्यानि जनार्दन। मिश्रा दुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः शङ्खाश्चाडम्बरैः सह॥
Arjuna said O Jaraddana, the auspicious drums are not best today and their sound does not add to the din created by the trumpet-blasts and conchblares.
वीणा नैवाद्य वाद्यन्ते शम्यातालस्वनैः सह। मङ्गल्यानि च गीतानि च गायन्ति पठन्ति च॥ स्तुतियुक्तानि रम्याणि ममानीकेषु बन्दिनः। योधाश्चापि हि मां दृष्ट्वा निवर्तन्ते ह्यधोमुखाः॥
The melodious Venu is not played upon accompanied by claps; auspicious songs, fraught with praises and delightful, are not sung in my troops today, by the minstrels and the bards. All warriors also, beholding me, are turning away.with their faces cast down.
कर्माणि च यथापूर्वं कृत्वा नाभिवदन्ति माम्। अपि स्वस्ति भवेदध भ्रातृभ्यो मम माधव॥
Duly performing the ceremonies one after another, they do not come forward to salute me. O Madhava, is everything well with all my brothers?
न हि शुद्ध्यति मे भावो दृष्ट्वा स्वजनमाकुलम्। अपि पाञ्चालराजस्य विराटस्य च मानद॥
Seeing my own people distressed with sorrow, my mind does not obtain peace. Does everything fare well, o bestower of honour, with the Panchala king or the ruler of the Viratas.
सर्वेषां चैवयोधानां सामग्यं स्यान्ममाच्युत। न च मामद्य सौभद्रः प्रहृष्टो भ्रातृभिः सह। रणादायान्तुमुचितं प्रत्युद्याति हसन्निव॥
Or with all of our warriors, you of undeteriorating glory? Alas, today Subhadra's son accompanied by his brothers, does not come out, smiling and joyful to receive me returning from battle.
संजय उवाच एवं सकथयन्तौ तौ प्रविष्टौ शिबिरं स्वकम्। ददृशाते भृशास्वस्थान् पाण्डवान् नष्टचेतसः॥
Sanjaya said Thus talking to one another, they both entered into their encampments and they beheld the Pandavas sit cheerless and with hearts distracted (with grief).
दृष्ट्वा भ्रातूंश्च पुत्रांश्च विमना वानरध्वजः। अपश्यंश्चैव सौभद्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्॥
Then that hero bearing the ape as a device on his banner, seeing his brother and sons (thus depressed), himself became melancholy. Then not finding Subhadra's son he spoke these
अर्जुन उवाच मुखवर्णोऽप्रसन्नो वः सर्वेषामेव लक्ष्यते। न चाभिमन्यु पश्यामि न च मां प्रतिनन्दथ॥
Arjuna said I see that the colour of your countenances has turned pale. I do not also see Abhimanyu here, nor do you welcome me.
मया श्रुतश्च द्रोणेन चक्रव्यूहो विनिर्मितः। न च वस्तस्य भेत्ताऽस्ति विना सौभद्रमर्भकम्॥
I have also heard that Drona today arrayed his troops in the circular order. There is also none among you capable of penetrating into that array, save my boy Abhimanyu.
न चोपदिष्टस्तस्यासीन्मयानीकाद् विनिर्गमः। कच्चिन्न बालो युष्माभिः परानीकं प्रवेशितः॥
But I did not teach him the means of coming out of that array. Is it that you made the boy enter the array of the enemy?
भित्त्वानीकं महेष्वासः परेषां बहुशो युधि। कच्चिन्न निहतः संख्ये सौभद्रः परवीरहा॥
Has that fierce bowman, that slayer of hostile heroes, namely, the son of Subhadra, having penetrated into those numberless divisions of the enemy, been slain in battle.
लोहिताक्षं महाबाहुं जातं सिंहमिवाद्रिषु। उपेन्द्रसदृशं ब्रत कथमायोधने हतः॥
Tell me, Oh, how that hero possessed of mighty arms and red eyes, who was born in our race, like a lion on the mountain breast and who resembled Upendra himself, has been slain in battle?
सुकुमारं महेष्वासं वासवस्यात्मजात्मजम्। सदा मम प्रियं ब्रूत कथमायोधने हतः॥
Tell me about Abhimanyu, the grandson of Indra, the great archer, delicate body youth and always dear to me. How was he slaughtered in the battle.
सुभद्रायाः प्रियं पुत्रं द्रौपद्याः केशवस्य च। अम्बायाश्च प्रियं नित्यं कोऽवधीत् कालमोहितः॥
What warriors, urged on by their evil Destiny, ventured to slay that dear-loved son of Subhadra, that favourite of Draupadi and Keshava, who was always fondly loved by my own mother (Kunti)?
सदृशो वृष्णिवीरस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः। विक्रमश्रुतमाहात्म्यैः कथमायोधने हतः॥
How has that hero resembling the highsouled Vrishni hero Keshava himself in prowess, generosity and acquaintance with the Shastras, been slain in battle?
वार्ष्णेयीदयितं शूरं मया सततलालितम्। यदि पुत्रं न पश्यामि यास्यामि यमसादनम्॥
If today I do not see that hero dearly loved by that daughter of Vrishni race (Subhadra) and fondly brought up by myself, I shall be a guest of Death's abode.
मृदुकुञ्चितकेशान्तं बालं वालमृगेक्षणम्। मत्तद्विरदविक्रान्तं शालपोतमिवोद्गतम्॥ स्मिताभिभाषिणं दन्तं गुरुवाक्यकरं सदा। बाल्येऽप्यतुलकर्माणं प्रियवाक्यममत्सरम्॥ महोत्साहं महाबाहुं दीर्घराजीवलोचनम्। भक्तानुकम्पिनं दान्तं न च नीचानुसारिणम्॥ कृतज्ञं ज्ञानसम्पन्नं कृतास्त्रमनिवर्तिनम्। युद्धाभिनन्दिनं नित्यं द्विषतां भयवर्धनम्॥ स्वेषां प्रियहिते युक्तं पितॄणां जयगृद्धिनम्। न च पूर्वं प्रहर्तारं संग्रामे नष्टसम्भ्रमम्॥ यदि पुत्रं न पश्यामि यास्मामि यमसादनम्।
Possessed of soft and curling hair-ends, of tender years, of eyes like those of a young gazelle graced with the tread of an infuriate elephant, resembling an offshoot of a Shala tree. Of sweet speeches attended with smiles, modest, ever ready to carry out the behests of his venerables, achieving in tender years, feats worthy of mature age, sweet-spoken, free from animosity. Of mighty energy and prowess, of eyes resembling large lotus-petals, ever merciful towards his followers, self-possessed, never pursuing mean objects and men. Ever grateful, endued with the knowledge of all things, unretreating and accomplished in the use of all kinds of weapons, ever delighting in battle and ever enhancing the terror of his adversaries. Always intent on bringing about the welfare of his own party, ever desirous of seeing victory secured by his own sires, never striking first in battle, never daunted in fight. Oh! if, I do not see such a son of mine, I shall carry me to the abode of Death.
रथेषु गण्यमानेषु गणितं तं महारथम्॥ मयाध्यर्धगुणं संख्ये तरुणं बाहुशालिनम्।

यदि पुत्रं न पश्यामि यास्यामि यमसादनम्।
In the tale of car-warriors, always counted with the mighty car-warriors. Possessed of mighty arins, of tender years, one and a half times superior to me in battle, always a favourite of myself, Pradyumna and Keshava. Oh, if I do not see that son of mine, I shall go to the regions of Death,
सुनसं सुललाटान्तं स्वक्षिभ्रदशनच्छदम्॥ अपश्यतस्तद्वदनं का शान्तिर्हदयस्य मे।
Graced with a beautiful nose and fore-head and eyes and eyebrows and teeth and lips. Oh, without seeing that countenance of his, I shall enjoy no peace of mind.
तन्त्रीस्वनमुखं रम्यं पुंस्कोकिलसमध्वनिम्॥ अशृण्वतः स्वनं तस्य का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे।
Delightful like the warding of a lyre, charming and melodious like the voice of a cuckoo. Oh, without hearing that voice of his what peace can my heart enjoy?
रूपं चाप्रतिमं तस्य त्रिदशेश्चापि दुर्लभम्॥ अपश्यतो हि वीरस्य का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे।
His beauty that was unequaled and scarce even among the heaven-dwelling gods. Oh, without beholding that beauty of his, what peace can my heart enjoy?
अभिवादनदक्षं तं पितॄणां वचने रतम्॥ नाद्याहं यदि पश्यामि का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे।
Skillful in congratulating and welcoming others, obedient to the commands of his sires. If I do not see that son of mine, what peace can my heart enjoy?
सुकुमारः सदा वीरो महार्हशयनोचितः॥ भूमावनाथवच्छेते नूनं नाथवतां वरः।
Brought up in all luxury, always heroic and accustomed to lie on precious beds. He lies today on the bare earth like one helpless, though he is foremost of all who have others to look after them.
शयानं समुपासन्ति यं पुरा परमस्त्रिय॥ तमद्य विप्रविद्धाङ्गमुपासन्त्यशिवाः शिवाः।
He upon whom, when on his bed, the most beautiful women used to attend. Oh! even he, his bodies mutilated with with shafts, has inauspicious jackals prowling over the field to attend upon him today!
यः पुरा बोध्यते सुप्तः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः॥ बोधयन्त्यद्य तं नूनं श्वापदा विकृतैः स्वनैः।
He who formerly used to be awakened from his sleep by songsters, ministrels and panegyrists. Oh! even he shall today be roused by the fierce yells of the beasts of prey.
छत्रच्छायासमुचितं तस्य तद् वदनं शुभम्॥ नूनमद्य रजोध्वस्तं रणरेणुः करिष्यति।
That auspicious and charming countenances of his, worthy of being shaded by umbrellas. Shall today be soiled with the dust rising from the field of battle.
हा पुत्रकावितृप्तस्य सततं पुत्रदर्शने॥ भाग्यहीनस्य कालेन यथा मे नीयसे बलात्।
Oh! my dear child, I, who was never satiated with looking at you. Alas! unfortunate that I am I have been forcibly bereft of you by Death.
सा च संयमनी नूनं सदा सुकृतिनां गतिः॥ स्वभाभि सिता रम्या त्वयात्पर्थं विराजते।
Surely the mansion of Death, that goal of persons of pious deeds. That delightful palace, has today been illumined by your splendour and so has been made highly charming by you.
नूनं वैवस्वतश्च त्वां वरुणश्च प्रियातिथिम्॥ शतक्रतुर्धनेशश्च प्राप्तमर्चन्त्यभीरुकम्।
"Surely Yama, Varuna, Indra of hundred sacrifices and Kubera, receiving yourself as a welcome guest, are making preparations for worshipping you.”
एवं विलप्य बहुधा भिन्नपोतो वणिग् यथा॥ दुःखेन महताऽऽविष्टो युधिष्ठिरमपृच्छत।
Thus copiously lamenting like a trader whose ship has been broken and being possessed by great grief Arjuna thus
कच्चित्स कदनं कृत्वा परेषां कुरुनन्दन॥ स्वर्गतोऽभिमुख: संख्ये युध्यमानो नरर्षभैः।
"O delighter of the Kurus, spreading a terrible, slaughter among the enemy's host, did my son ascend to heaven having fought with many foremost of men in battle?
स नूनं बहुभिर्यत्तैर्युध्यमानो नरर्षभैः॥ असहायः सहायार्थी मामनुध्यातवान् ध्रुवम्।
"Surely fighting carefully in battle, he, single-handed and needing assistance, repeatedly thought of me!
पीड्यमानः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः कर्णद्रोणकृपादिभिः॥ नानालिङ्गैः सुधौतागैर्मम पुत्रोऽल्पचेतनः। इह मे स्यात् परित्राणं पितेति स पुनः पुनः॥ इतयेवं विलपन् मन्ये नृशंसैर्भुवि पातितः।
Afflicted by Karna and Drona and Kripa and others, with exceedingly sharp shafts of various shape and well-polished tips, my son of smalll strength must have repeatedly thought-"My father will surely rescue me from this difficulty.” I think, when thus thinking of me he was felled to ground by those ruthless warriors.
अथवा मत्प्रसूत: स स्वस्रीयो माधवस्य च॥ सुभद्रायां च सम्भूतो न चैवं वक्तुमर्हति।
"Or it may be, that being begotten by myself and being the nephew of Madhava, being born out of Subhadra's womb, he did not utter such exclamations.
वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं सुठलं मम॥ अपश्यतो दीर्घ बाहुं रक्ताक्षं यन्न दीर्यते।
Surely my heart is made of the hardest adamant. In as much as, it does not burst open for my not seeing that one of mighty arms and red eyes.
कथं बाले महेष्वासा नृशंसा मर्मभेदिनः॥ स्वस्रीये वासुदेवस्य मम पुत्रेऽक्षिपञ्शरान्।
How could the fierce bowmen (of the Kaurava) hosts, ruthless and cruel, have sped their arrows capable of penetrating to the very vitals, at that boy of tender years, that son of mine and the nephew of Madhava?
यो मां नित्यमदीनात्मा प्रत्युद्गम्याभिनन्दति॥ उपायान्तं रिपून हत्वा सोऽद्य मां किं न पश्यति।
He of generous soul who everyday used to come out to receive me when I returned after having slain my foes, will he not see me today?
नूनं स पातितः शेते धरण्यां रुधिरोक्षितः॥ शोभयन् मेदिनीं गात्रैरादित्य इव पातितः।
Alas, he lies today prostrate on the field of battle weltering in his blood and enhancing the beauty of the earth with the splendour of his limbs and looking like the sun dropped from the firmament.
सुभद्रामनुशोचामि या पुत्रपपलायिनम्॥ रणे विनिहतं श्रुत्वा शोकार्ता वै विनक्ष्यति।
I am indeed also destined to grieve for Subhadra who hearing that her unretreating son has been slain in battle, shall be struck with sorrow and shall give up her life?
सुभद्रः वक्ष्यते किं मामभिमन्युमपश्यती॥ द्रौपदी चैव दुःखाते ते च वक्ष्यामि किं त्वहम्।
Oh! what will Subhadra say to me when she will not behold Abhimanyu (her son)! Alas, what also shall I tell to Draupadi overwhelmed with great grief?
वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं यन्न यास्यति॥ सहस्रधा वधूं दृष्ट्वा रुदतीं शोककर्शिताम्।
Surely my heart is made of the hardest adamant, in as much as it will not be splintered into thousand fragments when I shall behold my daughter-in-law (Abhimanyu's wife), bewail, afflicted with the burden of her grief.
हप्तानां धार्तराष्ट्राणां सिंहनादो मया श्रुतः॥ युयुत्सुश्चापि कृष्णेन श्रुतो वीरानुपालभन्।
I heard indeed the war-cries of the Dhritarashtras, elated with pride and Krishna also heard Yuyutsu admonishing the heroes in the following terms.
अशक्रुवन्तो बीभत्सुं बालं हत्वा महारथाः॥ किं मोदध्यवमधर्मज्ञाः पाण्डवं दृश्यतां बलम्।
0 mighty car-warriors, not being able to defeat Vibhatsu and slaying this boy of tender years. What do you rejoice? O inost unrighteous ones, now shall you feel the mighty of the son of Pandu.
किं तयोर्विप्रियं कृत्वा केशवार्जुनयोर्मधे॥ सिंहवन्नदथ प्रीताः शोककाल उपस्थिते। आगमिष्यति वः क्षिप्रं फलं पापस्य कर्मणः॥ अधर्मो हि कृतस्तीव्रः कथं स्यादफलश्चिरम्।
Having done an injury to Keshava and Arjuna in battle why do you roar like lions in delight. Verily your hour for grief has come. The fruits of you sinful acts will soon overtake you all. went away, You have committed a heinous crime not long will it delay in bearing the ripe fruit for you!'
इति तान् परिभाषन् वै वैश्यापुत्रो महामतिः॥ अपायाच्छस्त्रमुत्सृज्य कोपदुःखसमन्वितः।
Having spoken to them (the enemy) thus, the highly intelligent son of a Vaishya went away, leaving aside his weapons and leaving the Kauravas with wrath and sorrow.
किमर्थमेतन्नाख्यातं त्वया कृष्ण रणे मम॥ अधाक्षं तानहं क्रूरांस्तदा सर्वान् महारथान्।
Why, O Krishna, did you not tell me all this in the course of fight? I would then have burnt down all those cruel car-warriors of the enemy's host.
संजय उवाच पुत्रशोकार्दितं पार्थं ध्यायन्तं साश्रुलोचनम्॥ निगृह्य वासुदेवस्तं पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुतम्। मैवमित्यब्रवीत् कृष्णस्तीव्रशोकसमन्वितम्॥
Sanjaya said Thereafter the son of Vasudeva, consoling Pritha's (Arjuna) who overwhelmed with sorrow on account of his son, was exceedingly thoughtful, whose eyes were overflowing with tears and who, indeed, was afflicted by the grief generated by the slaughter of his son, said to him, "Do you not give way to grief."
सर्वेषामेष वै पन्थाः शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम्। क्षत्रियाणां विशेषेण येषां युद्धेन जीविका॥
This indeed is the inevitable fate of all those heroes who never think of retreating. Specially of the Kshatriyas who live by war. Of unretreating heroes fighting in battle, this.
एष वै युध्यमानानां शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम्। विहिता सर्वशास्त्रज्ञैर्गतिर्मतिमतां वर॥
O foremost of intelligent beings, has been specified to be the finale by those who are conversant with the meanings of our sacred scriptures. Death in battle is the inevitable fate of heroes who do not fly away from the field.
ध्रुवं हि युद्धे मरणं शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम्। गतः पुण्यकृतां लोकानभिमन्यु संशयः॥
Undoubtedly Abhimanyu has gone to the regions of those who perform pious deeds; and, O foremost of the Bharatas, even this is coveted by all heroes.
एतच्च सर्ववीराणां काक्षितं भरतर्षभ। संग्रामेऽभिमुखो मृत्युं प्राप्नुयादिति मानद॥
O Bharata, you are renowned for honouring others, listen that all chivalrous persons are passionate and consider it their prime objective to die while facing bravely the enemy.
स च वीरान् रणे हत्वा राजपुत्रान् महाबलान्। वीरैराकाइक्षितं मृत्युं सम्प्रापतोऽभिमुखं रणे॥
That they may fall in battle facing their enemies. As regards Abhimanyu, he, having slain in battle many heroic and mighty princes.
मा शुचः पुरुषव्याघ्र पूर्वैरेष सनातनः। धर्मकृद्भिः कृतो धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां रणे क्षयः॥
Hath reaped that death in battle which is so much desired by the heroes, O foremost of men, do not lament. The ancient sages have specified this to be the enduring merit of the Kshatriyas, viz., their fall in battle.
इमे ते भ्रातरः सर्वे दीना भरतसत्तम। त्वयि शोकसमाविष्टे नृपाश्च सुहृदस्तव॥
O foremost of the Bharatas, these your brothers are highly distressed. As also these monarchs and these your relatives, beholding you plunged in sorrow.
एतांश्च वचसा साम्ना समाश्वासय मानद। विदितं वेदितव्यं ते न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि॥
"O bestower of honour, do you console them with comforting speech. Everything worthy of being know is known to you. It behoves you not to indulge in grief.”
एवमाश्वासितः पार्थः कृष्णेनाद्भुतकर्मणा। ततोऽव्रबीत् तदा भ्रातृन् सर्वान् पार्थः सगद्गदान्॥
Thus consoled by Krishna of wonderful deeds, the son of Pritha (Arjuna) said to all his brothers these words in a voice choked with griefस दीर्घबाहुः पृथ्वंसो दीर्घराजीवलोचनः।
अभिमन्युर्यथावृत्तः श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं तथा॥
O lord of Earth, that mighty-armed one, that one possessed of eyes large lake lotus petals namely Abhimanyu, how he fought, I desire to know?
सनागस्यन्दनहयान् द्रक्ष्यध्वं निहतान् मया। संग्रामे सानुबन्धांस्तान् मम पुत्रस्य वैरिणः॥
You will see that, I will consume the enemy with their elephants, chariois and steeds in battle all those opponents of my son together with all their blood relations.
कथं च वः कृतास्त्राणां सर्वेषां शस्त्रपाणिनाम्।। सौभद्रो निधनं गच्छेद वर्जिणापि समागतः॥
You all are accomplished in the use of weapons and are even now armed with weapons. How then could Subhadra's son be slain in battle, even if it were the wielder of the thunder-bolt whom he might have encountered?
यद्येवमहमज्ञास्यमशक्तान् रक्षणे मम। पुत्रस्य पाण्डुपञ्चालान् मया गुप्तो भवेत् ततः॥
Alas, if I had known that the Pandavas and the Panchalas would be incompetent to protect my son in battle, myself would then have protected him.
कथं च वो रथस्थानां शरवर्षाणि मुञ्चताम्। नीतोऽभिमन्युनिधनं कदर्थीकृत्य वः परैः॥
You were all then on your chariots and were shooting your arrows; how could then Abhimanyu be slain by the enemy spreading havoc in your troops?
अहो वः पौरुषं नास्ति न च वोऽस्ति पराक्रमः। यत्राभिमन्युः समरे पश्यतां वो निपातितः॥
Alas, you possess no manliness! you have no prowess. Inasmuch as even before your very sight Abhimanyu was felled in battle.
आत्मानमेव गहेयं यदहं वै सुदुर्बलान्। युष्मानाज्ञाय निर्यातो भीरूनकृतनिश्चयान्॥

आहोस्विद् भूषणार्थाय वर्म शस्त्रायुधानि वः। वाचस्तु वक्तुं संसत्सु मम पुत्रमरक्षताम्॥

Except the son of Vasudeva or the eldest son of Pandu, none then ventured to speak to Arjuna.
सर्वास्ववस्थासु हितावर्जुनस्य मनोनुगौ। बहुमानात् प्रियत्वाच्च तावेनं वक्तुमर्हतः॥
These two (Yudhishthira and Krishna) were always agreeable to Arjuna. These two were only competent to address him all occasions, in as much as they were held in great veneration and dear love.
ततस्तं पुत्रशोकेन भृशं पीडितमानसम्। राजीवलोचनं कुद्धं राजा वचनमब्रवीत्॥
