संजय उवाच ततो राजानमभ्येत्य धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। ववन्दे स प्रहृष्टात्मा हते पार्थेन सैन्धवे॥
Sanjaya said The king of Sindhu being slain by Partha, (Krishna) then approached king Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma and worshipped him with a merry heart.
दिष्ट्या वर्धसि राजेन्द्र हतशत्रुर्नरोत्तमा दिष्ट्या निस्तीर्णवांश्चैव प्रतिज्ञामनुजस्तव॥
O king of kings, O best of men, by good luck your prosperity increases and your enemy has been slain. It is by good fortune too that your younger brother has fulfilled his promise.
स त्वेवमुक्तः कृष्णेन हृष्टः परपुरंजयः। ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा रथादाप्लुत्य भारत।॥
Thus addressed by Krishna, king Yudhishthira, the conqueror of enemies cities, got down from his car with delight, O Bharata.
पर्यष्वजत् तदा कृष्णावानन्दाश्रुपरिप्लुतः। प्रमृज्य वदनं शुभ्रं पुण्डरीकसमप्रभम्॥
And with his eyes full of tears of joy he embraced Krishna and Arjuna; and wiping his white face of lotus-like lustre.
अब्रवीद् वासुदेवं च पाण्डवं च धनंजयम्। प्रियमेतदुपश्रुत्य त्वत्तः पुष्करलोचन॥
Said to Vasudeva and the Pandava Dhananjaya (thus)-"0 mighty car-warriors, it is by good fortune that I behold you both after you have performed your heavy task in battle.
नान्तं गच्छामि हर्षस्य तितीर्घरुदधेरिवा अत्यद्भुतमिदं कृष्ण कृतं पार्थेन धीमता॥
As good luck would have it, that vilest wretch among men, the king of Sindhus, has been slain. O Krishna and Arjuna, by good luck you have filled me with supreme bliss.
दिष्ट्या पश्यामि संग्रामे तीर्णभारौ महारथौ। दिष्ट्या विनिहतः पाप: सैन्धवः पुरुषाधमः॥
(And) it is by good fortune that our enemies are downed in a sea of grief. In the three worlds there is nothing which they cannot perform.
कृष्ण दिष्ट्या मम प्रीतिमहती प्रतिपादिता। त्वया गुप्तेन गोविन्द जता पापं जयद्रथम्॥
Who have you, that are the lord of all the words, for their protector, O slayer of Madhu. Govinda, through your favour we will conquer our enemies.
किं तु नात्यद्भुतं तेषां येषां नस्त्वं समाश्रयः। न तेषां दुष्कृतं किंचित् त्रिषु लोकेषु विद्यते॥
As in days of yore, through you grace the chastiser of the Asura) Paka (i.e., Indra) did (conquer) the Danavas. Whether it be the supremacy over the three worlds.
स्थितः सर्वात्मना नित्यं प्रियेषु च हितेषु च। त्वां चैवास्माभिराश्रित्य कृतः शस्रसमुद्यमः॥
Everything is certain in the case of those who are in your good grace, O bestower of honours. Neither do they incur sin nor meet with reverses.
सर्वलोकगुरुर्येषां त्वं नाथो मधुसूदन। त्वत्प्रसादाद्वि गोविन्द वयं जेष्यामहे रिपून्।॥ सुरैरिवासुरवधे शक्रं शक्रानुजाहवे। असम्भाव्यमिदं कर्म देवैरपि जनार्दन।॥ अमानुषाणि दिव्यानि महान्ति च बहूनि च।
With whom, you that are the lord of the celestials, are pleased, O bestower of honours. O Hrishikesha, it is through your favour that Shakra, the lord of all the celestials.
तदैवाज्ञासिषं शत्रून् हतान् प्राप्तां च मेदिनीम्॥ त्वत्प्रसादसमुत्थेन विक्रमेणारिसूदन।
Endowed with prosperity, obtained sovereignty over the three world in battle. And O lord of the celestials, it is also through favour that the celestials.
त्वद्बुद्धिबलवीर्येण कृतवानेष फाल्गुनः। बाल्यात् प्रभृति ते कृष्ण कर्माणि श्रुतवानहम्॥
Have, O Krishna, obtained immortality and are in enjoyment of eternal regions. O destroyer of foes, it is by means of the prowess obtained through your favour.
सुरेशत्वं गतः शक्रो हत्वा दैत्यान् सहस्रशः॥ त्वत्प्रसादाद्धषीकेश जगत् स्थावरजङ्गमम्।
That Shakra having destroyed thousands of Daityas acquired the kingship of the celestials, O Hrishikesha, it is by reason of your grace, the universe, with its mobile and immobile creatures.
स्ववर्त्मनि स्थितं वीर जपहोमेषु वर्तते॥ एकार्णवमिदं पूर्वं सर्वमासीत् तमोमयम्।
Remaining in its own course is engaged in (religious) meditation and sacrifices, Originally, buried in darkness and one vast sheet of water.
त्वत्प्रसादान्महाबाहो जगत् प्राप्तं नरोत्तम॥ स्रष्टारं सर्वलोकानां परमात्मानमव्ययम्। ये पश्यन्ति हृषीकेशं न ते मुह्यन्ति कर्हिचित्॥ पुराणं परमं देवं देवदेवं सनातनम्।
As the universe was, it has become manifest through your grace, O mighty-armed one, O best of men. Those who look upon Hrishikesha as the creator of all the worlds, the Supreme Soul and as immutable are never subject to illusion. You are the Original Being, you are the Supreme God, you are the God of the gods and you are eternal.
ये प्रपन्ना: सुरगुरुं न ते मुह्यन्ति कर्हिचित्॥ अनादिनिधनं देवं लोककर्तारमव्ययम्।
Those that take refuge with you who are the lord of the celestials, are never subject to illusion; without beginning or end, divine, the lord of creation and immutable (as you are).
ये भक्तास्त्वां हृषीकेश दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते॥ परं पुराणं पुरुषं पराणां परमं च यत्।
They that are your worshippers, O Hrishikesha (always) get rid of difficulties. Supreme and Ancient male being and the most exalted of the exalted as you are.
प्रपद्यतस्तत् परमं परा भूतिर्विधीयते॥ गायन्ति चतुरो वेदा यश्च वेदेषु गीयते।
He that attains to your Supreme self enjoys the highest prosperity. The four Vedas sing of you and you are sung in the four Vedas.
तं प्रपद्य महात्मानं भूतिमश्नाम्यनुत्तमाम्॥ परमेश परेशेश तिर्यगीश नरेश्वर।
By taking refuge with you, O high-souled one, I shall enjoy the most excellent prosperity. O Supreme God, O god of the highest gods, O lord of the creation, O lord of men.
सर्वेश्वरेश्वरेशेश नमस्ते पुरुषोत्तम॥ त्वमीशेशेश्वरेशान प्रभो वर्धस्व माधव।
O most supreme god of all gods, I bow down to you, that are the best of all male beings. You are the Supreme Being, you are the Lord of Lords, O Lord, O Madhava, may you prosper.
प्रभवाप्यय सर्वस्य सर्वात्मन् पृथुलोचन॥ धनंजयसखा यश्च धनंजयहितश्च यः। धनंजयस्य गोप्ता तं प्रपद्य सुखमेधते॥
O Universal Soul, O large-eyed one, you are the origin of all. He that has Dhananjaya for his friend or he who is devoted to the welfare of Dhananjaya. Having attained to the protector of Dhananjaya, enjoys happiness.'
मार्कण्डेयः पुराणर्षिश्चरितज्ञस्तवानघ। माहात्म्यमनुभावं च पुरा कीर्तितवान् मुनिः॥
O innocent Sri Krishna! An ancient sage Markandeya knows yours character and that brilliant sage had explained me your impression and magnificence to me at the time of exile.
असितो देवलश्चैव नारदश्च महातपाः। पितामहश्च मे व्यासस्त्वामाहुर्विधिमुत्तमम्॥
You are explained as the best creator (Vidhi) by the sages like Asita, Devala, the great austerious Narada and my grand-father Vyasa.
त्वं तेजस्त्वं परं ब्रह्म त्वं सत्यं त्वं महत् तपः। त्वं श्रेयस्त्वं यशश्चायं कारणं जगतस्तथा॥ त्वया सृष्टमिदं सर्वं जगत् स्थावरजङ्गमम्। प्रलये समनुप्राप्ते त्वां वै निविशते पुनः॥
You are splendour yourself, you are supreme Brahma, great penance truth, welfare, the best fame and sole cause for universe. You have created this entire movable and immovable world and this world merges again with you at the time of great devastation (Pralaya).
अनादिनिधनं देवं विश्वस्येशं जगत्पते। धातारमजमव्यक्तमाहुर्वेदविदो जनाः॥
O lord of this entire world! The people learned to Vedas address you as without birth and death (Ajanama), divine form, lord of the great soul, everlasting and Vishvatomukh.
भूतात्मानं महात्मानमनन्तं विश्वतोमुखम्। अपि देवा न जानन्ति गुह्यमाद्यं जगत्पतिम्॥ नारायणं परं देवं परमात्मानमीश्वरम्। ज्ञानयोनि हरि विष्णुं मुमुक्षूणां परायणम्। परं पुराणं पुरुषं पुराणानां परं च यत्॥
Yours is top and undisclosed mystery. You are the foremost cause and supreme lord of this universe. You yourself are supreme god, Narayana, supreme soul (Paramatama) and Ishvara. You yourself are Sri Hari in the form of knowledge, the supreme shelter to the people desirous of emancipation, Vishnu. Gods even are alien to your real form. You yourself are beyond Puranas and supreme Purusha of Purana.
एवमादिगुणानां ते कर्मणां दिवि चेह च। अतीतभूतभव्यानां संख्यातात्र न विद्यते॥ सर्वतो रक्षणीयाः स्म शक्रेणेव दिवौकसः। यैस्त्वं सर्वगुणोपेतः सुहन्न उपपादितः॥
Nobody either on this or heaven is capable to make a record of the acts executed in past, present and future and to calculate yours such qualities (gunas). All of us are always defendable by you as lord Indra provides the gods with proper defence. We have got you as a meritorious friend.
इत्येवं धर्मराजेन हरिरुक्तो महायशाः। अनुरूपमिदं वाक्यं प्रत्युवाच जनार्दनः॥
The great illustrious god Janardana reciprocated Yudhishthira the Dharmaraja in the following words as per his appreciation made.
भवता तपसोग्रेण धर्मेण परमेण च। साधुत्वादर्जवाच्चैव हतः पापो जयद्रथः॥
O Dharmaraja! The evildoer Jayadratha has met to death because of your acute penance, supreme religion, gentleness and simplicity.
अयं च पुरुषव्याघ्र त्वदनुध्यानसंवृतः। हत्वा योधसहस्त्राणि न्यहन् जिष्णुर्जयद्रथम्॥
O chivalrous man (Purusha Simha)! your always sacrosanct feelings for all creatures has provided Arjuna with an impenetrable shield and he could kill Jayadratha after beheading several thousand warriors.
कृतित्वे बाहुवीर्य च तथैवासम्भ्रमेऽपि च। शीघ्रतामोधबुद्धित्वे नास्ति पार्थसमः क्वचित्॥
Nobody anywhere is comparable to Arjuna, the son of Kunti in respect of his knowledge in weaponry, physical stamina, smartness and target hitting savvy etc. qualities.
तदयं भरतश्रेष्ठ भ्राता तेऽद्य यदर्जुनः। सैन्यक्षयं रणे कृत्वा सिन्धुराजशिरोऽहरत्॥
Othe best in Bharata's dynasty! Owing to these qualities, your younger brother Arjuna has today beheaded Sindhuraja and killed the army of enemy in fierce battle.
ततो धर्मसुतो जिष्णुं परिष्वज्य विशाम्पते। प्रसृज्य वदनं तस्य पर्याश्वासयत प्रभुः॥
Oking! King Yudhishthira, Dharmaputra (son of Dharma) then embraced in tight grip to Arjuna, wiped his face and told the following worlds in consolation.
अतीव सुमहत् कर्म कृतवानसि फाल्गुन। असह्यं चाविषह्यं च देवैरपि सवासवैः॥
O Phalguna! You have executed a rare act today as god Indra including all gods were unable to execute or take-one this anus on their shoulders (viz. it was impossible even for the king of gods).
दिष्ट्या निस्तीर्णभारोऽसि हतारिश्चासि शत्रुहन्। दिष्ट्या सत्या प्रतिज्ञेयं कृता हत्वा जयद्रथम्॥
O enemy suppressor! You have discharged today the burden of commitment as you have killed your enemy. It is really a matter of good luck. It is really pleasing to see that you have fulfilled the commitment by killing Jayadratha.
एवमुक्त्वा गुडाकेशं धर्मराजो महायशाः। पस्पर्श पुण्यगन्धेन पृष्ठे हस्तेन पार्थिवः॥
The great illustrious king Yudhishthira with these words to Arjuna, the conqueror of sheep, patted on his back with his hand with sheer love.
एवमुक्तौ महात्मानावुभौ केशवपाण्डवौ। तावबूतां तदा कृष्णौ राजानं पृथिवीपतिम्॥
On his so delivered statement, Sri Krishna and Arjuna reciprocated the king in following words-
तव कोपाग्निना दग्धः पापो राजा जयद्रथः। उत्तीर्णं चापि सुमहद् धार्तराष्ट्रबलं रणे॥
O king! The evildoer king Jayadratha was burnt into ashes in the fire of your fury and it was your grace that enabled us to suppress the huge army of Duryodhana in the battle-field.
हन्यस्ते निहताश्चैव विनश्यन्ति च भारत। तव क्रोधहता ह्येते कौरवाः शत्रुसूदन॥
O Bharata! all these Kauravas have been killed owing to your fury, these are killed and will killed in future too as the fire of your fury is blazing in fierce flames.
त्वां हि चक्षुर्हणं वीरं कोपयित्वा सुयोधनः। समित्रबन्धुः समरे प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यति दुर्मतिः॥
Duryodhana, the wicked will finally die in the battle-field with his friends, relatives and siblings as a result of furiating you, the gallant capable to burn in ashes the enemy merely by a furious gaze.
तव क्रोधहतः पूर्वं देवैरपि सुदुर्जयः। शरतल्पगतः शेते भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः॥
Bhishma, the grandfather of Kuru family who earlier was tough to win even by gods, is now sleeping on the cot made of arrows owing to your destructive fury.
दुर्लभो विजयस्तेषां संग्रामे रिपुसूदन। याता मृत्युवशं ते वै येषां क्रुद्धोऽसि पाण्डव॥
O son of Pandu! You are suppressor of enemy and victory in battle is scarce for those on whom your curse befallen. They have definitely enslaved to the death.
राज्यं प्राणाः श्रियः पुत्राः सौख्यानि विविधानि च। अचिरात् तस्य नश्यन्ति येषां क्रुद्धोऽसि मानद॥
O honour giving king! The persons on being victim of your anger shall shortly see their kingdom, life, property, son and a number of luxuries destroyed.
विनष्टान् कौरवान् मन्ये सपुत्रपशुबान्धवान्। राजधर्मपरे नित्यं त्वयि क्रुद्धे परंतप॥
O pain giver to enemies! Being yours abiding to Rajadharma (the nationalism), I consider the Kauravas destroyed with sons, animals and siblings automatically in the fire of your anger.
ततो भीमो महाबाहुः सात्यकिश्च महारथः। अभिवाद्य गुरुं ज्येष्ठं मार्गणैः क्षतविक्षतौ॥ क्षितावास्तां महेष्वासौ पाञ्चाल्यैः परिवारितौ। तौ दृष्ट्वा मुदितौ वीरौ प्राञ्जली चाग्रतः स्थितौ॥
The long armed Bhimasena and great chariot holder Stayaki with their bodies injured of arrows then bowed their heads on the feet of Yudhishthira and stood on the ground. Having seen those great archers with folded hands and in charms on their faces; Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti greeted them heartily.
अभ्यनन्दत कौन्तेयस्तावुभौ भीमसात्यकी। दिष्ट्या पश्यामि वां शूरौ विमुक्तौ सैन्यसागरात्॥ द्रोणग्राहदुराधर्षाद्धार्दिक्यमकरालयात्।
He said-it is very opportuned time to see. both of you duly crossed the ocean of enemy's army. That ocean of army is inaccessible due to presence of the crocodile Dronacarya and the Kritavarma etc. crags are dwelling in that Ocean.
दिष्ट्या विनिर्जिताः संख्ये पृथिव्यां सर्वपार्थिवाः॥५५ युवां विजयिनौ चापि दिष्ट्या पश्यामि संयुगे।
It is the time to laugh in exhilaration as all kings defeated in battle and I am seeing both of you as conqueror in this battle-field.
दिष्ट्या द्रोणो जित: संख्ये हार्दिक्यश्च महाबलः॥५६ दिष्ट्या विकर्णिभिः कर्णो रणे नीतः पराभवम्। विमुखश्च कृतः शल्यो युवाभ्यां पुरुषर्षभौ॥
It was our destiny that supported and we could defeat Acarya Drona and Kritavarma in the battle. It was another support of destiny that Karna too was defeated in battle-field by virtue of your archery. O best gallants! Both of you have pressed Shalya to leave the battle-field.
दिष्ट्या युवां कुशलिनौ संग्रामात् पुनरागतौ। पश्यामि रथिनां श्रेष्ठावुभौ युद्धविशारदौ॥
It is pleasing to see you both warriors, best in chariot holders and efficient in war-craft returned safely from the battle-field.
मम वाक्यकरौ वीरौ मम गौरवयन्त्रितौ। सैन्यार्णवं समुत्तीर्णौ दिष्ट्या पश्यामि वामहम्॥
It is high time to feel gaiety when I am seeing you both warriors duly crossed the army ocean. You hold obligation of my dignity and honour the directions issued by me.
समरश्लाघिनौ वीरौ समरेष्वपराजितौ। मम वाक्य समौ चैव दिष्ट्या पश्यामि वामहम्॥
You both warriors keep my words while competing with rivals and undefeated in the battle field. It is my high destiny to see you safe here.
इत्युक्त्वा पाण्डवो राजन् युयुधानवृकोदरौ। सखजे पुरुषव्याघ्रौ हर्षाद् वाष्पं मुमोच ह॥
Having said these words, these words, o king! Yudhishithira, the son of Pandu embraced Satyaki and Bhimasena both and his eyes started shedding tears of joy.
ततः प्रमुदितं सर्वं बलमासीद् विशाम्पते। पाण्डवानां रणे हृष्टं युद्धाय तु मनो दधे॥
O majesty! The whole army of Pandavas then encouraged, gaiety brought new zeal to them and it concentrated whole-hearted on battling.
