संजय उवाच ततो दुःशासनो राजशैनेयं समुपाद्रवत्। किरशतसहस्त्राणि पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान्॥
Sanjaya said Meanwhile, o king, Dushasana advanced upon the grandson of Sini, shooting thousands of arrows, like a mighty rain-clouds pouring its contents.
स विद्धवा सात्यकिं षष्ट्या तथा षोडशभिः शरैः। नाकम्पय स्थितं युद्धे मैनाकमिव पर्वतम्॥
Having pierced Satyaki first with sixty shafts and next with sixteen, he could not make him tremble who was fighting steadily like the immovable Mainaka mountain.
तं तु दुःशासनः शूरः सायकैरावृणोद् भृशम्। रथावातेन महता नानादेशोद्भवेन च॥
Then that foremost of the Bharatas surrounded Satyaki with a mighty division of car-warriors born in various realms; he shot numerous arrows.
सर्वतो भरतश्रेष्ठ विसृजन् सायकान् बहून्। पर्जन्य इव घोषेण नादयन् वै दिशो दश॥
And filled the ten quarters with the clatter of his car-wheels, that resembled the rumble or rain clouds. Beholding that Kaurava hero advance upon him Satyaki.
तमापतन्तमालोक्य सात्यकिः कौरवं रणे। अभिदुत्य महाबाहुश्छादयामास सायकैः॥
Possessed of mighty arms, rushed against him and covered him with his own shafts. Then those warriors headed by Dushasana being thus covered by those arrowy showers.
ते छाद्यमाना बाणौधैर्दुःशासनपुरोगमाः। प्राद्रवन् समरे भीतास्तव सैन्यस्य पश्यतः॥
Became seized with panic and began to fly away even before the very eyes of your son. O monarch, when those warriors were thus flying, your son Dushasana.
तेषु द्रवत्सु राजेन्द्र पुत्रो दुःशासनस्तव। तस्थौ व्यपेतभी राजन् सात्यकिं चार्दयच्छरैः॥
Stood fearlessly before Satyaki afflicting him with his arrows. He then pierced the latter's charioteer with three and his steeds with four arrows;
चतुर्भिर्वाजिनस्तस्य सारथिं च त्रिभिः शरैः। सात्यकिं च शतेनाजौ विद्ध्वा नादं मुमोच सः॥
Then piercing Satyaki himself with a set of hundred arrows, he uttered his war-cry. Thereupon O mighty monarch, that descendant of Madhu's race, being worked up
तत: क्रुद्धो महाराज माधवस्तस्य संयुगे। रथं सूतं ध्वजं तं च चक्रेऽदृश्यमजिह्मगैः॥
Rendered Dushasana's car, charioteer and standard invisible with his swift flying arrows. he then entirely shrouded the heroic Dushasana with his shafts.
स तु दुःशासनं शूरं सायकैरावृणोद् भृशम्। सशकं समनुप्राप्तमूर्णनाभिरिवोर्णया॥
That subduer of foes then quickly covered Dushasana with his arrows like a spider cntangling a gnat in its web.
त्वरन् समावृणोद् बाणैर्दुःशासनममित्रजित्। दृष्टा दुःशासनं राजा तथा शरशताचितम्॥
with rage. Beholding Dushasana thus covered by the shafts of Satyaki, king Duryodhana urged the Trigarttas towards the car of Yuyudhana.
त्रिगर्मीश्चोदयामास युयुधानस्थं प्रति। तेऽगच्छन् युयुधानस्य समीपं क्रूरकर्मणः।
Then three thousand warriors of the Trigaratta clan versed in battling and of cruel deeds, reaching the car of Yuyudhana.
त्रिगर्तानां त्रिसाहस्त्रा रथा युद्धविशारदाः। ते तु तं रथवंशेन महता एर्यवारयन्॥
Surrounded the latter with the mighty division of their car. They on their hearts firmly on fighting and took terrible oaths.
स्थिरां कृत्वा मतिं युद्धे भूत्वा संशप्तका मिथः। तेषां प्रपततां युद्धे शरवर्षाणि मुञ्चताम्॥
As they rushed to battle discharging showers of arrows, Yuyudhana crushed five hundred of their foremost warriors that marched in their front.
योधान् पञ्चशतान् मुख्यानग्रयानीके व्यपोथयत्। तेऽपतन् निहतास्तूर्ण शिनिप्रवरसायकैः॥
They then began to fall down slain quickly by the arrows of the foremost of Sinis, like trees broken by the force of the wind falling down from the top of the mountain.
महामारुतवेगेन भग्ना इव नगाद् दुमाः। नागैश्च बहुधा च्छिन्नैर्ध्वजैश्चैव विशाम्पते॥ हयैश्च कनकापीडैः पतितैस्तत्र मेदिनी। शैनेयशरसंकृतैः शोणितौघपरिप्लुतैः॥ अशोभत महाराज किंशुकैरिव पुष्पितैः।
The field of battle, overspread with mangled elephants, 0 king and broken standards and fallen bodies of horses furnished with golden traces and wounded and cut by the arrows of Sini's grandson and rolling in their blood, looked beautiful like a plain covered over with Kinsuka trees decked with blossoms.
ते वध्यमानाः समरे युयुधानेन तावकाः॥ त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छन्त पङ्कमग्ना इव द्विपाः।
Then all those warriors of yours, slain in battle by Yuyudhana, were unable to find out a protector like elephants sunk in deep mire. was
ततस्ते पर्यवर्तन्त सर्वे द्रोणरथं प्रति॥ भयात् पतगराजस्य गर्तानीव महोरगाः।
Thereafter terrified all of them proceeded towards the car of Drona like mighty snakes entering their holes from fear of the king of birds (Garuda).
हत्वा पञ्चशतान् योधाञ्छरैराशिविषोपमैः॥ प्रायात् स शनकैर्वीरो धनंजयरथं प्रति।
Slaying five hundred warriors with his arrows resembling snakes of virulent poison, the heroic Satyaki proceeded slowly towards the car of Dhananjaya.
तं प्रयान्तं नरश्रेष्ठं पुत्रो दुःशासनस्त्व॥ विव्याध नवभिस्तूर्ण शरैः संनतपर्वभिः।
Then as that foremost of men proceeding your son Dushasana pierced him quickly with nine shafts of depressed knots.
स तु तं प्रतिविव्याध पञ्चभिर्निशितैः शरैः॥ रुक्मपुखैर्महेष्वासो गापत्रैरजिह्मगैः।
Him the fierce bowmen Satyaki pierced in return with five sharp shafts, all straight flying and furnished with golden as well as vulterine wings.
सात्यकिं तु महाराज प्रहसन्निव भारत॥ दुःशासनस्त्रिभिर्विद्ध्वा पुनर्विव्याध पञ्चभिः।
But O Bharata, Dushasana, smiling a little, pierced Satyaki O king, first with three and then with five shafts,
शैनेयस्तव पुत्रं तु हत्वा पञ्चभिराशुगैः॥ धनुश्चास्य रणे छित्त्वा विस्मयन्नर्जुनं ययौ।
Thereupon the grandson of Sini wounding your son with five swift-coursing arrows cutoff the latter's bow and then smiling a little proceeded towards Arjuna.
ततो दुःशासनः क्रुद्धो वृष्णिरवीराय गच्छते॥ सर्वपारशवीं शक्तिं विससर्ज जिघांसया।
Thereat Dushasana, highly enraged and desirous of slaying the Vrishni hero as he was proceeding, hurled at him a lance capable of penetrating through all things.
तां तु शक्तिं तदा घोरां तव पुत्रस्य सात्यकिः॥ चिच्छेद शतधा राजन् निशितैः कङ्कपत्रिभिः।
But that dreadful lance hurled by your son, Satyaki cut-off, O king, with whetted shafts furnished with wings of the Kanka bird.
अथान्यद् धनुरादाय पुत्रस्तव जनेश्वर॥ सात्यकिं च शरैर्विद्ध्वा सिंहनादं ननर्द ह।
O ruler of men, then your son taking up another bow pierced Satyaki with his arrows and then uttered a loud war-cry.
सात्यकिस्तु रणे क्रुद्धो मोहयित्वा सुतं तव॥ शरैरग्निशिखाकारैराजघान स्तनान्तरे। त्रिभिरेव महाभागः शरैः संनतपर्वभि।
Thereat Satyaki waxing wroth, stupefied your son and struck him on the centre of his chest with arrows resembling tongues of fire.
सर्वायसैस्तीक्ष्णवक्त्रैः पुनर्विव्याध चाष्टभिः॥ दुःशासनस्तु विंशत्या सात्यकिं प्रत्यविध्यत।
He then once more pierced Dushasana with eight arrows made completely of iron and of sharp heads. Dushasana in return pierced Satyaki with twenty shafts of eminents parts.
सात्वतोऽपि महाराज तं विव्याध स्तनान्तरे॥ त्रिभिरेव महाभागः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः।
He, of the Satvata race of eminent parts o mighty monarch, again pierced him on the breast with three arrows of straight knots.
सारथिं च सुसंक्रुद्धः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः। ततोऽस्य वाहान निशितैः शरैर्जने महारथः॥
Then that mighty car-warrior, highly inflamed with rage, slew Dushasana's steeds with sharp arrows and his charioteer with numerous shafts of depressed knots.
धनुरेकेन भल्लेन हस्तावापं च पञ्चभिः॥ ध्वजं च रथशक्तिं च भल्लाभ्यां परमास्त्रवित्। चिच्च्द विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तथोभौ पार्णिसारथी॥
Versed in the use of many excellent weapons Satyaki then cut-off Dushasana's bow with a single bhalla, his gloves with five and his chariot and chariot shaft, with a couple of broad-headed arrows with sharp shafts he cutoff his two Parshni drivers. Then Dushasana, deprived of his car, with his bow burst open, his charioteer and steeds slain.
स च्छिन्नधन्वा विस्थो हताश्वो हतसारथिः। त्रिगर्तसेनापतिना स्वरथेनापवाहितः॥
Was carried away by the commander of the Trigartta divisions on his own chariot. O Bharata, then the grandson of Sini once more assailed him.
तमभिद्रुत्य शैनेया मुहूर्तमिव भारत! न जघान महाबाहुर्भीमसेनवचः स्मरन्॥ भीमसेनेन तु वधः सुतानां तव भारत। प्रतिज्ञातः सभामध्ये सर्वेषामेव संयुगे॥
But he refrained from slaying him remembering the words of Bhimasena. O Bharata, amidst the assembly Bhimasena before swore to slay your sons. Then Satyaki, vanquishing Dushasana, quickly proceeded in the track in which Dhananjaya had proceeded, Oking.
