वैशम्पायन उवाच उत्थितायां पृथायां तु सुभद्रा भ्रातर तदा। दृष्ट्वा चुक्रोश दुःखार्ता वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्॥ पुण्डरीकाक्ष पश्य त्वं पौत्रं पार्थस्य धीमतः। परिक्षीणेषु कुरुषु परिक्षीणं गतायुषम्॥
Vaishampayana said After Kunti had sat up, Subhadra, seeing her brother, began to weep aloud, and stricken with excessive grief, said, O you having eyes like lotus-petals, look at the grandson of Arjuna of great intelligence! Alas, the Kururace having been thinned, a child has been born that is feeble and dead.
इषीका द्रोणपुत्रेण भीमसेनार्थमुद्यता। सोत्तरायां निपतिता विजये मयि चैव ह॥
The blade of grass, uplifted by Drona's son for bringing about the destruction of Bhimasena, fell upon Uttara and Vijaya and myself.
सेयं विदीर्णे हृदये मयि तिष्ठति केशव। यन्न नश्यामि दुर्धर्ष सहपुत्रं तु तं प्रभो॥
Alas, that blade, O Keshava, is still existing (unexpected) in me, after having pierced my heart, since I do not, O irresistible hero, see this child with iny son.
किं नु वक्ष्यति धर्मात्मा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनार्जुनौ चापि माद्रवत्याः सुतौ च तौ॥
What will the righteous-souled king Yudhishthira the just say? What will Bhimasena and Arjuna, and the two sons of Madravati also say?
श्रुत्वाभिमन्योस्तनयं जातं च मृतमेव च। मुषिता इव वार्ष्णेय द्रोणपुत्रेण पाण्डवाः॥
Hearing that Abhimanyu's son was born and dead, the Pandavas, O you of Vrishni's race, will consider themselves as imposed upon by Ashvatthaman.
अभिमन्युः प्रियः कृष्ण भ्रातृणां नात्र संशयः। ते श्रुत्वा किं नु वक्ष्यन्ति द्रोणपुत्रास्त्रनिर्जिताः॥
Abhimanyu, O Krishna, was, forsooth, the minion of all the Pandava-brother. Hearing this intelligence, what will those heroes, defeated by the weapon of Drona's son say?
भवितातः परं दुःखं किं तदन्यज्जनार्दन। अभिमन्योः सुतात् कृष्ण मृताज्जातादरिंदम॥
Bowing grief, O Janardana, can be greater than this, viz., that Abhimanyu's son should be born and dead?
साहं प्रसादये कृष्ण त्वामद्य शिरसा नता। पृथेयं द्रौपदी चैव ताः पश्य पुरुषोत्तम॥
Bowing to you with my head, O Krishna, I seek to please you today! See O foremost of men, these two standing here, viz., Pritha and Draupadi.
यदा द्रोणसुतो गर्भान् पाण्डूनां हन्ति माधव। तदा किल त्वया द्रौणिः क्रुद्धनोक्तोऽरिमर्दन॥ अकामं त्वां करिष्यामि ब्रह्मबन्धो नराधम। अहं संजीवयिष्यामि किरीटितनयात्मजम्॥
When, O Madhava, the son of Drona tried to destroy the embryos even in the wombs of the ladies of the Pandavas, at that time, O grinder of enemies, you said in anger to Dronas son (even these words). O wretch of a Brahmana, O vilest of men I shall disappoint your wish! I shall revive the son of Kiritin's son.
इत्येतद् वचनं श्रुत्वा जानानाहं बलं तव। प्रसादये त्वां दुर्धर्ष जीवतामभिमन्युजः॥
Hearing these words of yours and wellknowing your power, I seek to gratify you, O irresistible hero! Let the son of Abhimanyu be revived.
यद्येतत् त्वं प्रतिश्रुत्य न करोषि वचः शुभम्। सकलं वृष्णिशार्दूल मृतां मामवधारय॥
If having pledged yourself previously you do not accomplish your auspicious vow, do you then know for certain, O chief of the Vrishni race, that I shall put an end to my life.
अभिमन्योः सुतो वीर न संजीवति यद्ययम्। जीवति त्वयि दुर्धर्ष किं करिष्याम्यहं त्वया॥
If, O hero, this son of Abhimanyu does not revive when you, O irresistible one, are alive and near, of what other use will you be to me?
संजीवयैनं दुर्धर्ष मृतं त्वमभिमन्युजम्। सदृशाक्षसुतं वीर सस्यं वर्षन्निवाम्बुदः॥
Do you, therefore, O irresistible one, revive this son of Abhimanyu, this child who has eyes similar to his, even as a rain-charged cloud revives the lifeless crops (on a field).
त्वं हि केशव धर्मात्मा सत्यवान् सत्यविक्रमः। स तां वाचमृतां कर्तुमर्हसि त्वमरिंदम॥
You, O Keshava, are righteous-souled, truthful, and of prowess incapable of being baffled. You should, O chastiser of enemies make your words truthful.
इच्छन्नापि हि लोकांस्त्री जीवयेथा मृतानिमान्। किं पुनर्दयितं जातं स्वस्रीयस्यात्मजं मृतम्॥
If only you wish it, you can revive the three worlds (of being) if dead! What need, I say, therefore, of this darling child, born but dead, of your sister's son?
प्रभावशास्मि ते कृष्ण तस्मात् त्वां याचयाम्यहम्। कुरुष्व पाण्डुपुत्राणामिमं परमनुग्रहम्॥
I know your power, O Krishna! Therefore do I solicit you! Do you show this great favour to the sons of Pandu.
स्वसेति वा महाबाहो हतपुत्रेति वा पुनः। प्रपन्ना मामियं चेति दयां कर्तुमिहार्हसि॥
You should, O mighty-armed one, show mercy to this Uttara, or to me, thinking that I am your sister or even a mother who has lost her son, and one who has thrown herself upon your protection.
