ऋषि ऊचु: पिनाकिन् भगनेत्रन्ध सर्वलोकनमस्कृता माहात्म्यं वासुदेवस्य श्रोतुमिच्छामि शङ्कर॥
The Rishis said (O holder of Pinaka, O tearer of the eyes of Bhaga, O you adored of the entire universe, we wish to hear the glory of Vasudeva.
ईश्वर उवाच पितामहादपि वरः शाश्वतः पुरुषो हरिः। कृष्णो जाम्बूनदाभासो व्यभ्रे सूर्य इवोदितः॥
Maheshvara said Hari is superior to the Grandfather himself. He is the Eternal Purusha. Otherwise called Krishna, He is cndued with the splendour of gold and gifted with solar effulgence.
दशबाहुमहातेजा देवतारिनिषूदनः। श्रीवत्साङ्को हृषीकेशः सर्वदैवतपूजितः॥
Having ten arins, He is gifted with great energy, and is the Destroyer of the enemies of the celestials. He has a whirl on His breast, and curly locks of hair on His head. He is adored of all the celestials.
ब्रह्मा तस्योदरभवस्तस्याहं च शिरोभवः। शिरोरुहेभ्यो ज्योतींषि रोमभ्यश्च सुरासुराः॥
Brahman has sprung from his abdomen. I have originated from his head. All the luminaries in the sky have originated from his hair. From the bristles on his body have originated all the gods and demons.
ऋषयो देहसम्भूतास्तस्य लोकाश्च शाश्वताः। पितामहगृहं साक्षात् सर्वदेवगृहं च सः॥
From his body have originated the Rishis as also all the eternal worlds. He is the abode of the Grandfather and of all the gods.
सोऽस्याः पृथिव्याः कृत्स्नायाः स्रष्टा त्रिभुवनेश्वरः। संहर्ता चैव भूतानां स्थावरस्थ चरस्य च॥
He is the Creator of this Earth, and He is the Lord of the three worlds. He is also the Destroyer of all creatures mobile and immobile.
स हि देववरः साक्षाद् देवनाथः परंतपः। सर्वज्ञः सर्वसंश्लिष्टः सर्वगः सर्वतोमुखः॥
He is, indeed, the Foremost of all the celestials. He is their Master. He is the Chastiser of all enemies. He is gifted with Omniscience. He exists in everything. He is capable of going everywhere. He permeates everything.
परमात्मा हृषीकेश: सर्वव्यापी महेश्वरः। न तस्मात् परमं भूतं त्रिषु लोकेषु किंचन॥
He is the Supreme Soul, He is the Worker of all the senses. He covers the universe. He is the Supreme Lord. There is nothing in the three worlds which is superior to Him.
सनातनो वै मधुहा गोविन्द इति विश्रुतः। स सर्वान् पार्थिवान् संख्ये घातयिष्यति मानदः॥ सुरकार्यार्थमुत्पन्नो मानुषं वपुरास्थितः। न हि देवगणा: सक्तास्त्रिविक्रमविनाकृताः॥ भुवने देवकार्याणि कर्तु नायकवर्जिताः। नायकः सर्वभूतानां सर्वदेवनमस्कृतः॥
He is Eternal. He is the destroyer of Madhu, and is otherwise called Govinda. The Giver of honors, He will cause all the kings of Earth to be killed in battle, for securing the purposes of the celestials, taking birth in a human form. The celestials, abandoned by Him, are unable to do their work on Earth Without Hiin as their Icader they cannot do anything. He is the leader of all creatures and is worshipped by all the gods.
एतस्य देवनाथस्य देवकार्यपरस्य च। ब्रह्मभूतस्य सततं ब्रह्मर्षिशरणस्य च॥ ब्रह्मा वसति गर्भस्थः शरीरे सुखसंस्थितः। शर्वः सुखं संश्रितश्च शरीरे सुखसंस्थितः॥
Within the abdomen of this Master of the gods Who always docs celestial work, of this one who is at one with Brahman, and Who is always the refuge of the twicehorn Rishis, lives Brahman. Indeed, the latter lives happily in Hari's body which is his abode. I myself, that am called Sharva, also live happily in that happy abode of mine.
सर्वाः सुखं संश्रिताश्च शरीरे तस्य देवताः। स देवः पुण्डरीकाक्षः श्रीगर्भः श्रीसहोषितः॥
All the celestials, too, live happily in His body. Gitted with great effulgence, He has cyes which resemble lotus petals The goddess (if prosperity lives within Him and He lives always in his company.
शाङ्गचक्रायुधः खड्गी सर्वनागरिपुध्वजः! उत्तमेन स शीलेन दमेन च शमेन च॥ पराक्रमण वीर्येण वपुषा दर्शनेन च। आरोहण प्रमाणेन धैर्येणार्जवसम्पदा॥ आनृशंस्येन रूपेण बलेन च समन्वितः। अस्त्रैः समुदितः सर्वैदिव्यैरद्भुतदर्शनैः॥
The bow called Sharanga and the discus (called Sudarshana) are his weapons, as well as i sword. He has the emblem of the enemy of all the snakes his standard. He is distinguished by excellent conduct, by purity, by self-control, by prowess, by energy, by the most beautiful form, by tallness and well proportioned limbs, by patience, by sincerity, by riches, by mercy, by the beauty of form, and by power. He shines, having all celestial weapons of wonderful form and make.
योगमायः सहस्राक्षो निरपायो महामनाः। वीरो मित्रजनश्लाघी ज्ञातिबन्धुजनप्रियः॥
He has Yoga for his illusion. He has a thousand eyes. He is free from every stain or fault. He is highminded. He is gifted with on heroism. He is an object of pride with all his friends. He is dear to all his kinsmen and relatives and they are dear to him.
क्षमावांश्चानहंवादी ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मनायकः। भयहर्ता भयार्तानां मित्राणां नन्दिवर्धनः॥
He is gifted with forgiveness. He is free from prive or egotism. He is devoted to the Brahmanas and is their leader. He removes the fears of all persons stricken with fear. He increases the joys of all his friends.
शरण्यः सर्वभूतानां दीनानां पालने रतः। श्रुतवानर्थसम्पन्नः सर्वभूतनमस्कृतः॥
He is the refuge of all crcatures. He is ever engaged in protecting and cherishing the distressed. Having mastery over all the scriptures and every kind of affluence, He is adored by all beings.
समाश्रितानां वरदः शत्रूणामपि धर्मवित्। नीतिज्ञो नीतिसम्पन्नो ब्रह्मवादी जितेन्द्रियः॥
Knowing all duties, He is a great benefactor of even even enemies when they scek His protection. Conversant with policy and endued with policy. He is an utterer of Brahma and has all His senses under perfect restraint.
भवार्थमिह देवानां बुद्ध्या परमया युतः। प्राजापत्ये शुभे मार्गे मानवे धर्मसंस्कृते॥ समुत्यस्यति गोविन्दो मनोवंशे महात्मनः। अङ्गो नाम मनोः पुत्रो अन्तर्धामा ततः परः॥
For doing good to the celestials, Govinda will take birth in the family of ..ie great Manu. Indeed, gifted with great intelligence. He will take birth in the auspicious and righteous family of that Prajapati. Manu will have a soni mained Anga. After Anga will come Antardhaman.
अन्तर्धाम्नो हविर्धामा प्रजापतिरनिन्दितः। प्राचीनबहिर्भविता हविर्धाम्नः सुतो महान्॥
From Antardhaman will Havirdhaman, that lord of all creatures, free from every stain. Havirdhaman will beget an illustrious son named Prachinavarhi. come
तस्य प्रचेत:प्रमुखा भविष्यन्ति दशात्मजाः। प्राचेतसस्तथा दक्षो भवितेह प्रजापतिः॥
He will have ten sons having Prachetas for their first. Prachetas will have a son named Daksha who will be regarded as a Prajapati. Daksha will begeta daughter named Dakshayani.
दाक्षायण्यास्तथाऽऽदित्यो मनुरादित्यतस्तथा। मनोश्च वंशज इला सुद्युम्नश्च भविष्यति॥
From Dakshayani will spring Aditya. and from Aditya will spring Manu. Manu will beget a daughter named Ila and a son named Sudyumna.
बुधात् पुरूरवाश्चापि तस्मादायुर्भविष्यति। नहुषो भविता तस्माद् ययातिस्तस्य चात्मजः॥
Ila will have Budha for her Husband, and from Budha will spring Pururavas. From Pururavas will spring Ayu. From Ayu will spring Nahusha, and Nahusha will beget a son named Yayati.
यदुस्तस्मान्महासत्त्वः क्रोष्टा तस्माद् भविष्यति। क्रोष्टुश्चैव महान् पुत्रो वृजिनीवान् भविष्यति॥
From Yayati will spring a powerful son named Yadu. Yadu will beget Kroshtri. Kroshtri will beget a powerful son named Vrijinivat.
वृजिनीवतश्च भविता उषड्गुरपराजितः। उषगोर्भविता पुत्रः शूरचित्ररथस्तथा॥
Vrijinivat will beget beget the invincible Ushadgu. Ushadgu will beget a son named Chitraratha.
तस्य त्ववरजः पुत्रः शूरो नाम भविष्यति। तेषां विख्यातवीर्याणां चरित्रगुणशालिनाम्॥ यज्वनां सुविशुद्धानां वंशे ब्राह्मणसम्मते। स शूरः क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठो महावीर्यो महायशाः। स्ववंशविस्तरकर जनयिष्यति मानदः॥
Chitraratha will have a younger son of the name of Shura. Indeed, in the family of these powerful men of energy known all over the world, gifted with excellent conduct and pure in son various accomplishments, given to the performance of sacrifices and pure behaviour, in the pure family honoured by the Brahmanas, Shura will take his birth. He will be a foremost Kshatriya, gifted with great energy, and possessed of great fame.
वसुदेव इति ख्यातं पुत्रमानकदुन्दुभिम्। तस्य पुत्रश्चतुर्बाहुर्वासुदेवो भविष्यति॥
Shura, that giver of honors, will beget a son, the perpetuator of his family, of the name of Vasudeva, otherwise called Anakadundhubhi.
दाता ब्राह्मणसत्कर्ता ब्रह्मभूतो द्विजप्रियः। राज्ञो मागधसंरुद्धान् मोक्षयिष्यति यादवः॥
Vasudeva will have a of name Vasudeva. He will have four hands. He will be greatly liberal, and will honour the Brahmanas greatly. Identical with Brahman, he will love and like the Brahmanas, and the Brahmanas will love and like him.
जरासंधं तु राजानं निर्जित्य गिरिगह्वरे। सर्वपार्थिवरत्नाढ्यो भविष्यति स वीर्यवान्॥
That scion of Yadu's race will liberate many kings confined in the prison of the king of the Magadhas (Jarasandha) after defeating him in his capital buried among mountains.
पृथिव्यामप्रतिहतो वीर्येण च भविष्यति। विक्रमेण च सम्पन्न: सर्वपार्थिवपार्थिवः॥
Gifted with great energy, he will be rich with the jewels and gems of all rulers of the Earth. Indeed, in energy he will be peerless on Earth.
शूरसेनेषु भूत्वा स द्वारकायां वसन् प्रभुः। पालयिष्यति गां देवीं विजित्य नयवित् सदा॥ तं भवन्तः समासाद्य वाङ्माल्यैरहणैर्वरैः। अर्चयन्तु यथान्यायं ब्रह्माणमिव शाश्वतम्॥ यो हि मां द्रष्टुमिच्छेत ब्रह्माणं च पितामहम्। द्रष्टव्यस्तेन भगवान् वासुदेवः प्रतापवान्॥ दृष्टे तस्मिन्नहं दृष्टो न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा। पितामहो वा देवेश इति वित्त तपोधनाः॥
Possessed of great prowess, he will be the king of all kings of the Earth. Foremost among all thc Surasenas, the powerful one, living at Dwaraka, will rule and protect the entire Earth after defeating all her kings conversant as he will be with the science of policy. Assembling together do you all worship Him, as you adore the Eternal Brahman, with speech, flowers, and excellent incense and perfumes. He who wishes to see me or the Grandfather Brahman should first see the illustrious Vasudeva of great power. If he is seen I am seen, as also the Grandfather Brahman, that foremost of all the celestials.
स यस्य पुण्डरीकाक्षः प्रीतियुक्तो भविष्यति। तस्य देवगणः प्रीतो ब्रह्मपूर्वो भविष्यति॥ यश्च तं मानवे लोके संश्रयिष्यति केशवम्। तस्य कीर्तिर्जयश्चैव स्वर्गश्चैव भविष्यति॥ धर्माणांदेशिकः साक्षात् स भविष्यति धर्मभा।
I do not find any difference in this. Know this, O Rishis having asceticism for wealth. That person with whom the lotus-eyed Vasudeva becomes pleased, is liked by all the deities with Brahman amongst them. That man who will seek the protection of Keshava will succeed in acquiring great achievements and victory and Heaven. He will be an instructor in religion and duties, and will acquire great religious merit.
धर्मवद्भिः स देवेशो नमस्कार्यः सदोद्यतैः॥ धर्म एव परो हि स्यात् तस्मिन्नभ्यर्चिते विभौ।
All persons knowing religion and duties should, with great readiness, bow down to that Lords of all the gods. By adoring that powerful one, one will acquire great merit.
स हि देवो महातेजाः प्रजाहितचिकीर्षया॥ धर्मार्थं पुरुषव्याघ्र ऋषिकोटी: ससर्ज ह।
Gifted with great energy, that god with the desire of benefiting all creatures, created millions of Rishis for the sake of virtue.
ता: सुष्टास्तेन विभुना पर्वते गन्धमादने॥ सनत्कुमारप्रमुखास्तिष्ठन्ति तपसान्विताः।
Those millions of Rishis, thus created by that great Ordainer are now living on the mountains of Gandhamadana, headed by Sanatkumara and engaged in the performance of penances.
तस्मात् च वाग्मी धर्मज्ञो नमस्यो द्विजपुङ्गवाः॥ दिवि श्रेष्ठो हि भगवान् हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः।
Hence, you foremost of twice born ones, that foremost of all eloquent persons, viz., the righteous Vasudeva, should be worshipped by all. The illustrious Hari, the powerfu! Narayana, is, indeed, the foremost of all beings in Heaven.
वन्दितो हि स वन्देत मानितो पानयीत च। अर्हितश्चाई येन्नित्यं पूजितः प्रतिपूजयेत्॥
Adored, he adores, and honoured, he honors; to them who make offerings to him, he makes offerings in return. Worshipped, he worships in return.
दृष्टः पश्येदहरहः संश्रितः प्रतिसंश्रयेत्। अर्चितश्चार्च येन्नित्यं स देवो द्विजसत्तमाः॥
If seen always, he sees the seers always. If one seeks His refuge and protection, He seeks the seeker as His refuge in return. O foremost of all righteous ones, if adored and worshipped, He adores and worships in return.
एतत् तस्यानवद्यस्य विष्णोर्वे परमं व्रतम्। आदिदेवस्य महतः सज्जनाचरितं सदा॥
This is the practice of the faultless Vishnu. This is the vow that is practised by all righteous people, of that first of all deities, that powerful Lord of all creatures.
भुवनेऽभ्यर्चितो नित्यं देवैरपि सनातनः। अभयेनानुरूपेण युज्यन्ते तमनुव्रताः॥
He is always adored in the world. That Eternal Being is adored by even the celestials. Those persons who are devoted to Him with the steadiness of a vow become freed from calamity and fear proportionate to his devotion.
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा स नमस्यो द्विजैः सदा। यत्नवद्भिरुपस्थाय द्रष्टव्यो देवकीसुतः॥
The regenerate ones should always adore Him in thought, word, and deed. The son of Devaki should be seen by them with respect and in order to see Him with respect they should undertake the performance of penances.
एष वोऽभिहितो मार्गो मया वै मुनिसत्तमाः। तं दृष्ट्वा सर्वशो देवं दृष्टाः स्युः सुरसत्तमाः॥
O foremost of ascetics, this is the path that I show to you. By seeing Him, you will have scon all the foremost of celestials.
महावराहं तं देवं सर्वलोकपितामहम्। अहं चैव नमस्यामि नित्यमेव जगत्पतिम्॥
I, too, vow my head in respect to that Lord of the universe, that Grandfather of all the worlds, that powerful and huge boar.
तत्र च त्रितयं दृष्टं भविष्यति न संशयः। समस्ता हि वयं देवास्तस्य देहे वसामहे॥
By seeing Him one sees ihe Trinity. Ourselves, viz., all the celestials, live in Him.
तस्य चैवाग्रजो भ्राता सितादिनिचयप्रभः। हली बल इति ख्यातो भविष्यति धराधरः॥
He will have an elder brother who will be known over all the world by the name of Bala. having a plough for his weapon in form hie will look like a white hill. In fact, he will be gifted with strength capable of uplifting the entire Earth.
त्रिशिरास्तस्य दिव्यश्च शातकुम्भमयो द्रुमः । ध्वजस्तृणेन्द्रो देवस्य भविष्यति रथाश्रितः ॥
Upon the car of that divine person a tall palmyra, three-headed and made of gold, will be his standard.
शिरो नागैर्महाभोगैः परिकीर्णं महात्मभिः। भविष्यति महाबाहोः सर्वलोकेश्वरस्य च॥ चिन्तितानि समेष्यन्ति शस्त्राण्यस्त्राणि चैव ह ।
The head of that mighty-armed hero, that Lord of all the worlds. will be covered with many huge snakes. All weapons of attack and defence will also come to hiin as soon as he will think of them.
अनन्तश्च स एवोक्तो भगवान् हरिरव्ययः॥ समादिष्टश्च विबुधैर्दर्शय त्वमिति प्रभो। सुपर्णो यस्य वीर्येण कश्यपस्यात्मजो बली। अन्तं नैवाशकद् द्रष्टुं देवस्य परमात्मनः॥
He is called Ananta (Infinite). That Illustrious One is at one with the immutabic Hari. Once on a time, the celestials thus spoke to the mighty Garuda, the son of Kashyapa:-Do you, O powerful one, sce if this one has any end. Though giſted with great cnergy and power, Garuda, however, could not find out the end of this Illustrious One who is at one with the Supreme Soul.
स च शेषो विचरते परया वै मुदा युतः। अन्तर्वसति भोगेन परिरभ्य वसुन्धराम्॥
pporting the entire Earth on His head, He lives in the nether regions. He roves through the universe as Shesha, filled with great joy.
य एव विष्णु: सोऽनन्तो भगवान् वसुधाधरः । यो राम: स हृषीकेशो योऽच्युतः स धराधरः॥
He is Vishnu, He is the illustrious Ananta. He is the supporter of the Earth. He who is Rama is Hrishikesha. He who is Achyuta is Ananta the bearer of the Earth.
तावुभौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ दिव्यौ दिव्यपराक्रमौ। द्रष्टव्यौ माननीयौ च चक्रलाङ्गलधारिणौ॥
Both of those foremost of all creatures are celestial and gifted with divine prows. One of them is armed with the discus and the other with the plough. They deserve every honour and should be seen.
एप बोऽनुग्रहः प्रोक्तो मया पुण्यस्तपोधनाः। यद् भवन्तो यदुश्रेष्ठं पूजयेयुः प्रयत्नतः॥
I have, through my kindness for you, have thus described to you the nature of Vasudeva. This you ascetics having penances for wealth. is Virtue. I have described all this to you so that you may, with respect and care, adore Krishna, that Foremost One of Yadu's race.
